Public meetings begin on plans to decimate bus, commuter rail, ferry and Green Line service

The MBTA starts a series of public meetings on Tuesday to let the public vent helplessly pipe up about plans to cut a number of bus lines, all ferry service, weekend and post-10 p.m. commuter rail service and the E line on weekends.

The T says it also wants to hear from commuters on its plans to raise fares by at least 35% to help make up a $160 million projected shortfall in the fiscal year that begins July 1.

New restaurant sets down the law

Patrick Maguire lists the house rules printed on the menu at the oddly undercapitalized jm Curley, where he is a bartender. They start:

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s date, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor his grub, nor his cocktail, his barstool, space, nor anything that is thy neighbour's.

Not everybody looks kindly upon the guy who roams Copley Square on a sail-equipped scooter

Scooterdude reports some of the less-than-favorable reactions he gets from people, including the ever popular "get a job!" and motorists who scream at him about taking up valuable road space. Also:

There's the 'deer-in-the-headlights' reaction when a pedestrian crossing against the traffic light steps right in front of the Wind-scooter, stops and, stunned, waits for there to be a collision. Fortunately, both my skill and the braking feature of the scooter secures my immediate halt.

The mouse who loved mustard

Dan Miller reports stumbling onto the lair of the mouse in his house:

While cleaning the basement, we found a rolled-up carpet remnant with several little mustard packs inside, nibbled open and sucked dry.

Our little friend had to climb up on top of a condiment-supply table, carry the pack of mustard with his teeth and scurry to the other side of the basement.

Do some JP residents risk running afowl of city zoning code?

Jamaica Plain New Economy Transition is holding a potluck dinner on Thursday at which to discuss urban agriculture, under a title that would be sure to get Zoning Board of Appeals members and ISD inspectors clucking: Backyard Chickens and Urban Agriculture:

Come hear from local chicken expert about keeping chickens. Hear stories of urban ag in JP, and share your own adventures.

Last July, the Zoning Board of Appeals - chaired by Jamaica Plain resident Robert Shortsleeve - ruled JP and Roslindale residents could not keep backyard chickens because of the zoning in the neighborhoods.

The potluck begins at 6 p.m. at the Nate Smith House, 155 Lamartine St.
