Boston Police tweet the Century Bank branch at 136 State St. was held up this morning by a guy claiming to have a gun.

Man smacked, shot at in East Boston robbery attempt

District A-7 reports a man getting into his car at 294 Bremen St. managed to escape with only a bullet in his back seat when two guys tried to stick him up.

Police say the two men approached him and one showed him his small silver handgun and demanded his money:

Radio for a good cause

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on WTKK - radiothon for Fisher House Boston, which provides housing for families of disabled or wounded vets being treated at local VA hospitals. There'll be a bunch of dignitaries on the radiothon, from Colin Powell to Keith Lockhart. And Playboy's Miss January, 2010.

Happy birthday, Boston Light Fresnel lens

The light source may have changed over the years, but the Coast Guard reports that the Fresnel lens that has let mariners know they're nearing Boston Harbor is the same one that was first used on Dec. 21, 1859:

... It's a flashing mechanism is comprised of 4,000 pounds of brass and glass rotating on a clock-works mechanism. ... Boston Light's entire assembly is 11 feet tall comprising of 336 individual prisms with 12 bullseyes. Today, the illuminate in the center of the lens is a 1,000 watt lamp, magnifying the light 2,000,000 candle power that's visible for 27 nautical miles on a clear night. The lighting characteristic is distinguishable from other lights in the harbor with its one flash every 10 seconds. ...

Why we need the Boston Globe

Last week, the Globe reported on the trail of ruin left by Dorchester real-estate investor Michael David Scott. The story wasn't a surprise to the folks at the Dorchester Reporter; in fact, they first started covering the guy in 2008. But Reporter Managing Editor (and retired Globie) Tom Mulvoy explains how the Reporter had to hand off the story to the Globe when Scott's lawyers threatened a suit - and why we still need large metro news organizations:

The thrust of a newspaper report that is presenting something that is a scoop or the product of lengthy enterprise work comes early in the morning, at roughly the same time every day for everyone who subscribes to the paper. If it is especially newsworthy, it then explodes into the web world for all to read in their electronic warrens. Absent the larger-circulation paper, its staff work and its reputation, who sets off the explosion? ...
