They could call it 311 to Go, if only Boston had 311

Globe: City to unveil iPhone complaint app:

"If I'm just walking along the sidewalk and I have a complaint - maybe a storm knocked downed a tree - I could take a photo and send it immediately," said Christopher Loh, 28, a press assistant in the mayor's office who helped come up with the idea for the program. "You don't have to bumble around looking for a number to call. It's right there in the palm of your hand."

If, that is, you're a savvy cyberdude with an iPhone, as opposed to everybody else, who will have to bumble around looking for a number to call because unlike, oh, New York or Somerville, the city's citizen line is not 311 (it's 617-635-4500 if you want to key it into your cell now).

Ahoy, me hearty clam chowder

The secret is the cream

It was warm but not sweltering yesterday as thousands of Bostonians stood in the sun downing clam chowder. Ned Devine's won, followed by Parker's and Farmer Brown's.

Fail Whale squashes BostonTweet

The Phoenix reports an attempt by Twitter to get rid of spammers has snared lots of legitimate users, including Boston's own BostonTweet, which lets users post news and event info (ironically, the Phoenix doesn't know if BostonTweet's founder responded to a reporter's request for more info since the Phoenix IT department decided this would be a good weekend to shut down the newspaper's e-mail system).

Tim Wakefield is an All-Star!! (oh, and 5 other Sox players too)

Well, he's had sixteen and a half years to prepare for July 14th in St. Louis. Tim Wakefield's solid 10-3 record has placed him tied for the lead in wins in the American League and deservedly gotten him into the All-Star Game.

Of course, he wasn't going to be allowed in to his first All-Star Game without a little rookie hazing from Francona in the clubhouse today. Joining Wakefield at the All-Star game are 5 other players, making the most from any one club this year: Jonathan Papelbon, Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Jason Bay, and Josh Beckett. Congrats to the Red Sox, but congratulations most of all to Tim Wakefield.

What Tom Cruise wants, Tom Cruise gets, part II

First we learned state officials listened to their inner thetans and gave TC his multi-million-dollar tax credit back. Now Sam Baltrusis reports:

As production moves forward with "Wichita," the upcoming spy flick starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz set to film in Boston this September, the latest rumor is that pre-production crews are currently hashing out an elaborate water-based chase scene slotted to be shot on the Charles River and will involve closing down several landmarks along the way including a few bridges. ...

Pitiful treatment of disabled at Esplanade fireworks

Yesterday my daughter and I decided to brave the crowds and head to the Esplanade from Newton. Before we left I checked the July 4th web site put up by the city, and specifically looked for information about handicapped parking and seating. On the site they indicated that there would be parking spaces for the handicapped with placards on Storrow Drive as well as a parking lot at Mass Eye and Ear with shuttle buses.

He visits every single subway stop in a single day

Michael Femia read about some guy who visited every single London Tube stop, so he set out to re-create the feat here. He reports on his 12-hour adventure on Friday. And he posts a photo from every single stop, save one. First person to figure out which one gets an autographed copy of his station checklist.

If the British really wanted to reclaim City Hall Plaza, would we stop them?

Redcoats

One of the more charming parts of July Fourth in Boston is when a troop of Redcoats fail to collapse in the heat in their woolen uniforms re-take a set of steps on the site of City Hall Plaza. They've been doing it for years, and, amazingly, no Minutemen ever show up to confront them. 16WadeSt watched them advance up the stairs this weekend.
