Where's the lane?

Matthew Anderson snapped this shot of how quickly the brand-new Columbus Avenue bike lanes (installed just this past August) can disappear, thanks to some BWSC work.

The Jamaica Plains Gazzette has an article about how Forest Hills Station has run out of Bike Charlie Cards. In it, mention is made (in passing) that this cage for 100 bikes cost $4,800,000 (4.8 million!!!!)

HIGHLIGHTS
Overall, the at-large city council candidates showed us they understand a range of issues. The laugh of the night came with the audience question, "What does the Asian Long Horned Beetle mean to you? ?Stumped, Felix Arroyo answered, "Well if it has horns, it must not be good."

Wicked Local Brookline reports police say they still don't know what caused Tracy Milillo to fall to the ground and die on Sept. 9, but that it was not a collision with a car.

On the southbound side, they start at the Forest Hills T stop, go into Rozzie Square, follow South Street and then just stop at Select Cafe (Birch Street). Northbound, looks like the stripes were put in, but not the bike icons.

Sean Roche reports on and photographs the aftermath of a collision at Beacon Street and St. Thomas More Rd. around 6 tonight. He reports the bicylist was taken to Beth Israel with back pain; the front of the bike was busted.

No more envious sighs when the subject of the Alewife cage comes up, Boston Biker reports. The new storage room opens Sept. 29, with room for up to 100 bikes.

Nick Bonadies tweets a bicyclist was hit by a car this morning at Beacon and Marion streets, across from the 7-Eleven, possibly by a car that cut her off in an attempt to make a right turn.

That makes at least three bicyclists hit by cars in two weeks in a town that has been busy putting in bicycle lanes. No word on his condition, but cops and EMTs were on scene when Bonadies went by.

Boston Biker posts photos of two Brighton bike racks blocked by planters from a nearby ice-cream shop. He reports he's moved the planters when the need arose, but they then get moved back in front of the racks.

With its wide avenues and actual, dedicated bike lanes. Mike Ball returns from a trip there and is amazed at what you can do with real streets - but also what a little enforcement might do on our non-cow paths:

... I think of the new, narrow bike lanes painted for a short distance on Columbus Avenue here. Eleven days ago, I took it both ways. In that short distance, I counted 22 motor vehicles blocking the lane, 9 one way and 13 back. Of course, there was no enforcement. Bikes had to take the single lane in either direction from cars and trucks to move instead. ...
