The T is running new announcements on the Green Line, at least at above-ground stops: "Pay your fare! It's only fair!"

A horde of guys from across Boston and the South Shore face assault-and-battery charges for their alleged roles in a beatdown at the Green Briar Pub on Washington Street on Jan. 24 that sent a 20-year-old man to nearby St. Elizabeth's Hospital in serious condition, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. The truck was flying and smashed into 4 cars, then the driver took off running!

State Sen. William Brownsberger reports the state agency in charge of keeping state-owned buildings in good repair informed him today:

The project of fixing the courthouse steps is in the final stages of design, will go out to bid in a month and the work should be done this summer.

Brownsberger inquired after seeing complaints about the ongoing eyesore on a Cleveland Circle online forum.

Flipped car on Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton

Richard Murray happened upon the aftermath of whatever the hell caused this car to flip on Comm. Ave. at Colborne in Brighton around 7:30 p.m.

Earlier in the day, a car completely flipped at Welles and Washington in Dorchester.

And, of course, there was yesterday's car turned turtle on Soldiers Field Road.

Red car flipped on Soldiers Field Drive in Brighton

Paul the roving UHub photographer spotted this car-turned-turtle this morning on Soldiers Field Road by the Eliot Bridge in Brighton, around 11:10 a.m. He reports the driver got out by herself, seemed OK and that when he called 911, they reported police were already aware.

Boston College announced today it hopes to break ground on a 240,000-square-foot recreational center on St. Thomas More Drive this summer, along with new baseball, softball and general intramural sportsball fields on campus. Read more.

Layla the dog

UPDATE, 2 p.m. Found at a gas station in Newton.

Among the occupants of the house at 72 Perthshire Rd. in Brighton that went up in flames last night was Layla the dog, who ran away and hasn't been seen since.

She's described as a shy, four-year-old pit bull. If you spot her, don't try to chase her, but instead call the number at the link.

A fire reported around 7 p.m. at 72 Perthshire Rd. quickly went to three alarms and caused an estimated $500,000 in damage, the Boston Fire Department reports.

Fire Investigators determined the cause as careless disposal of smoking material. Point of origin; 2nd floor rear porch.

The Crimson reports how the the Allston Brighton Community Development Corp. used a $3 million grant from Harvard to gain loans with which to buy houses in Allston/Brighton to then re-sell to people on condition they live in those houses.

Ironically, one of the first houses the group bought they got by outbidding a couple looking to move from Cambridge to Brighton - they then resold the house to the couple.

Stupid space savers in Brighton

You may recall how, on Thursday, the city announced there was no snow emergency and don't even think of putting out space savers (then repeated the message as the snow began to fall yesterday), let alone for the post-emergency 48 hours.

And yet, when some concerned citizen reported these two space savers on Colborne Road in Brighton (and not even shoveled out, for Chrissakes), the city replied: Read more.

Kosta looked out his window at Brooks and Bigelow in Brighton around 10 p.m. He reports firefighters moved the remains of the tree out of the way - and that it didn't take out any wires.

Tim Murphy captured the beginning of demolition at the old theater (and the old Applebee's), which will make way for apartments for senior citizens and a hotel.

But Murphy also forwarded the above photo from the theater's better days, when the restaurant next door was a Howard Johnson's and the T still ran 1940s-era trolleys.

In recent months, 427 units of housing have been proposed in a small Brighton neighborhood:

New Balance has proposed 295 units at 125 Guest St. as part of its massive Boston Landing development. The 17-story building abuts the New Balance athletic facility where the Bruins will practice and New Balance's flagship, ship-like building lines the Massachusetts Turnpike. Read more.
