The Zoning Board of Appeal this week approved a plan by the owner of a parking lot on Cambridge Street in Charlestown to tear down a warehouse and create an expanded lot able to hold up to 431 cars of workers for a nearby employee. Read more.

Bearing Arms reports that the musket first fired by a colonial at the Battle of Bunker Hill recently sold at auction for $492,000.

An anonymous buyer snapped up the historical item after it was put up for auction by the family of Private John Simpson, which had held onto the Dutch Type III musket over the centuries.

Dust from sand and gravel

The Massachusetts Attorney General's office yesterday sued Boston Sand & Gravel over what it says is excessive sand and dust flowing into a small creek and into the air from the company's five-acre facility in Charlestown. Read more.

Bomb squads from both Boston and Cambridge Police today recovered small metal boxes with taped "Open Me" notes on the side as the departments urged the public to be cautious and to call 911 if they found more. Read more.

Paddling across Boston Harbor

Steve Holt, who lives in East Boston but works in Charlestown, reports that he and Rob Pyles commuted over to Charlestown this morning via inflatable paddleboards.

Holt reports they spent about 45 minutes on the water but that part of that time was spent admiring Old Ironsides at the Navy Yard.

What a mess in Charlestown

The Boston Fire Department reports roughly 50 gallons of oil spilled onto the driveway at the Aamco transmission shop at 125 Cambridge St. in Charlestown around 9 a.m. while being pumped into a reclamation truck after it was full up.

Through liberal use of absorbent material, the BFD hazmat team contained the spill - and will remain on scene until it is fully cleaned up and removed.
