Defaced Christopher Columbus statue in the North End

Matt Conti at NorthEndWaterfront.com forwarded this photo of the defacement of the Christopher Columbus statue in Columbus Park some time last night.

By noon today, the paint and message were completely gone after a thorough power washing by a city crew.

Over the years, the statue has been marked up by people with a point to make - once, the statue was even decapitated.

Bird on a light in Boston Harbor

Spotted this small seabird today on the harbor side of the North Washington Street bridge. Anybody know what kind of bird it is?

Boston Police report arresting a Somerville man in connection with last night's home invasion at 77 Endicott St. Three other men remain at large. Read more.

UPDATE: One suspect arrested. Also changed some of the details in this post based on the police report.

Shortly before midnight, four men - one armed with a shotgun and one with a knife - broke into an apartment on Endicott Street near Cooper. The gunman fired his shotgun; the occupant was not hit.

Three of the men were described as black, wearing dark clothes. One was white, in his 20s, wearing a dark gray hoodie.

The Globe reports the chain, which started in the North End, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The Boston Fire Department responded around 7 a.m. to a roof fire at 22 Hull St. for a roof fire.

The cause of the fire, quickly doused, is under investigation.

Cottone, LaMattina and Pressley

The City Council today formally honored Officer Shana Cottone who stopped her car while driving home through the North End on April 14 to rush through an occupied building next to one that had erupted in flames to get residents out. Read more.

Fire at 96 Endicott St.

Firefighters responded to 3 Stillman Pl in the North End shortly before 4 p.m. for a fire that sent flames shooting into the air and went to two alarms.

The Boston Fire Department reports the fire erupted on the third and fourth floors of the vacant four-story building and that part of the roof gave way.

Smoke from tractor trailer fire rises above the North End

Shortly before 10 a.m., Boston firefighters responded to Hanover Street near Commercial, where a tractor trailer was on fire. Shortly after 10 a.m., they reported they'd knocked the fire down.

The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy yesterday began work in its parks near the North End that will include replacing some of the current benches with "porch swings" that will let sitters sway with the breeze or a little foot power.

All the remaining current metal benches, which often get too hot to sit on in the summer, will also be replaced as part of the $400,000 project - which will also include new plantings in the Greenway segments on either side of Hanover Street :
