Holding bloggers to higher ethical standards than reporters and editors?

Paul Levy asks the question, in response to Dan Kennedy taking him to task for not mentioning he backs Charlie Baker in a post criticizing the way Deval Patrick is trying to curb health-care costs.

Kennedy continues the discussion at his blog.

Kennedy probably won't agree with your characterization as it being a higher standard. He makes the point that not only journalists but also op-ed columnists are not supposed to be contributing financial to political campaigns in the first place. (Unless they are Fox News Channel hosts.) Since Levy has contributed, and since his blog post reads pretty much like an op-ed in the Globe, he ought to disclose his contributions.

I certainly don't expect any faux objectivity from a blogger. And I never cared whether op-ed writers contributed to campaigns. There have been some kooky editors who claimed that they didn't even vote - talk about missing the point. If you do your work properly, it shouldn't matter whether you give money to a campaign or not. And if you don't do your job properly, all the petty rules will have been for naught.
