He is truly an irredeemable mess of a person. Glad he will be kept away from society and kudos to the DOC employees who have to deal with his ilk.

I heard on WBZ AM that he'll be eligible for parole because he was a minor when the crime occurred. I hope that's inaccurate.

Because we've allowed snake oil salesmen so-called scientists to convince us that juvenile murderers deserve special treatment because of their age.

And if society truly considers giving a convicted murderer the possibility of parole after X number of years to be a good and fair thing, then it should apply to everyone regardless of age.

Lastly, note this. Chism was tried and convicted as an adult. He should also be sentenced as an adult..

to judge 14 year olds as adults. this is a healthy thing to do, yes. life in prison for 14 year olds. such fair. many justice.

That may ease your conscience.

But not mine.

i think it is a general failure of justice. my bone to pick is with the systemic failure of our criminal justice system

What do you propose the punishment should be for a 14 year old for raping, murdering, and raping the corpse of his teacher?

up
Voting closed 0

and sentence (if found guilty) the person for raping, murdering, and raping the corpse of his teacher. Because that's the only thing that is relevant here, the crimes.

And if the defense wants to play the "but he's only 14" card, let them do that during trial. But don't base how the trial is conducted or any punishment on that basis.

He was tried and convicted as an adult- he should face an adult sentence.

Our justice system is truly messed up if we give a higher consideration to a murderer's age than to the murder itself.

When you finish law school and work your way up to sitting on the SJC, you can decide that. If you can convince the other legal experts, that is.

... but the United States Supreme Court (dominated by conservatives) held no life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for crimes committed by juveniles.

up

The Supreme Court ruled that automatic life without parole is unconstitutional as applied to juveniles. They ruled that it may be imposed, but only after an individualized sentencing hearing. The SJC took it a step further and ruled that it may not be imposed under any circumstances.

As being raped and murdered while at work. He's not the only one from this in a box.

A 14 year old who rapes and murders his teacher, and then rapes her corpse, is not one who can be salvaged.

up
Voting closed 0

that even without the rape, the sentence would be much the same as far as i understand it.

up

Rape is horrible, vile and evil. BUT MURDER you dont recover from.

up
Voting closed 0

i dont know what your problem with that is

At 14 you know how wrong brutal rape and murder is. He committed the two ultimate sins in cold blood. In other places he'd be put to death.

He will get out of jail eventually. In the meantime he'll have a good long time to think of how he wants to spend his remaining years; maybe he'll redeem himself before he dies.

2edgy4me.

its edgy to be concerned about a mandatory sentence of life in prison for murder if youre 14 years old is edgy, thats on you, not on me.

if you have trouble with the concept that while in this particular case it might be warranted or necessary, but that doesn't make it a just and wise mandatory sentence, that is also on you

up
Voting closed 0

What should his sentence be?

up
Voting closed 0

but you dont need to be a proctologist to recognize the stench of poo. in his case it may well be warranted but as i've said at least once in this comment section, my issue is with the broader lack of justice that the policy represents rather than what may or may not be appropriate in this instance.

figuring out how to treat somebody that premeditates a murder, rapes the victim, and then has sex with the corpse is beyond me, if at all possible. it doesn't mean that i need to agree that mandatory life sentences for murder are a good policy.

I've been trying to take your comments at face value, although I'm pretty sure you have been morphing hard into the troll category here.

That being said, why are you concerned about the sentence, exactly? You keep saying it's a "failure of the justice system" without articulating why that I can see.

Too lenient? Mandatory life without parole is unconstitutional. The death penalty doesn't exist in Massachusetts. Are you saying you'd prefer either of these, which are the only "harsher" sentences I can imagine, unless you're getting a full-on torture boner or something?

Too harsh? Then what, exactly? Just pat him on the head and wish him well?

...my issue is with the broader lack of justice that the policy represents rather than what may or may not be appropriate in this instance.

What other kind of justice would there be? He's going to prison, which is where we send people who break the law. Are you thinking that the family gets a go with a baseball bat or something?

figuring out how to treat somebody that premeditates a murder, rapes the victim, and then has sex with the corpse is beyond me, if at all possible. it doesn't mean that i need to agree that mandatory life sentences for murder are a good policy.

So, WHAT SHOULD BE GOOD POLICY OH CONCERNED YET VAGUE ONE?

Rather than complain that no one reads what you are typing, why don't you actually SAY what you're trying to say, rather than just concern-trolling UHub to death with bullshit statements that you never back up or clarify, just keep commenting over and over again like the poor, misunderstood troll you are?

Or am I reading you wrong? Maybe I am. Anyone else want to help me understand?

i made it pretty clear that his age was a big concern of mine, in that he is young, and sentenced to life in prison (with parole)

which is still a sentence of life in prison

For confirming my point. Which is that you are concerned, and want to keep reminding us that you are concerned, but have no other thoughtful items to share. I look forward to seeing your next post full of concern.

14 year olds should be sentenced to life in prison. i thought that was more clear. now its abundantly clear. my bad.

also craig, you should seriously consider taking some sort of sedative.

Of constantly reading your millions of posts that all amount to gibberish. Consider it pent-up frustration for the last few weeks of your trolling all over UHub.

But I'm glad you're concerned.

up

not reading posts that i make if they upset you so much? honest question. i certainly don't read books i don't like, or cook myself a dinner i don't enjoy.

unless its some sort of weird masochistic form of self flagellation for you or something

He throws out hyperbolic statements then spends the rest of the thread dissembling, walking back, changing the argument, etc. it's a wast of your time.

up

to face hard time for brutally murdering and raping someone? It's not like it was a juvenile prank gone wrong.

On what planet is this punishment too harsh?

This kid is getting far better than he deserves.

Is this really news? There didn't seem to be any mystery to whodunit.

The killer was insane. What sane person would go see a Woody Allen movie as their last free act before being arrested for murder?

up

This is a horrible little bit of local history. I am actually pleasantly surprised that there aren't a shitload of nasty, violent UHub posts for this one. RIP Colleen Ritzer.

Who birthed this kid, and did they try to get help for him, before he turned from a troubled kid to hellspawn?
