Man arrested for trying to shoot somebody to death at Cambridge park

Cambridge Police report arresting Shawndell Johnson, 22, of Cambridge, on charges he fired multiple rounds at somebody at Clement Morgan Park on Columbia Street around 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

Johnson, who lives about about a mile away, on Putnam Avenue, was charged with armed assault to murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and carrying a loaded firearm without a license, police say, adding he did not hit anybody.

Police say officers responding to a report of an argument followed by gunfire found eight shell casings in and near the park.

Multiple individuals in the area of the gunshots were identified and questioned by officers about the gunshots and any argument, however there was limited cooperation. Over the course of the last two days, Officers have maintained an active and visible presence in the area, speaking to residents in the neighborhood, obtaining and reviewing video surveillance, and conducting a follow-up investigation related to the Clement Morgan Park shooting and other recent shootings in the neighborhood.

As a result of these efforts and cooperation from members in the community, a warrant was secured for the arrest of Shawndell Johnson, 22, 625 Putnam Avenue, after he was positively identified as a shooter from the Clement Morgan Park gunshots incident on Wednesday afternoon. Johnson was taken into custody this evening at his residence and will face multiple charges, including Armed Assault to Murder, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building, and Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License. He also had a warrant for Possession of Class D with Intent to Distribute.

It was the charge of assault with intent to murder part that got me there, of course - police didn't think he was just shooting into the air or whatever.
