No bail for men accused of shooting Boston officer in the leg, pending 'dangerousness' hearing

A Boston Municipal Court judge today ordered Requon Martin, 21, of the South End, and Antoine Mack, 35, of Pawtucket, RI, held without bail for the shooting of a Boston police officer in the South End yesterday, at least until a hearing on Wednesday.

At that hearing, a judge will determine whether the pair constitute an immediate danger to the public and, if so, should be held without bail for up to two months longer, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

According to a police account, gang-unit officers were on routine patrol shortly before 2 p.m. when they noticed a double-parked Mercedes coupe blaring music on West Springfield Street. When they pulled up behind the car in their black SUV, two men standing in front of 91 West Springfield grabbed their waists - which police officers know often means they have a gun there - and went inside the building, a police report states.

The plainclothes officers got out, identified themselves as police and demanded the men stop, the report says. Instead, the men entered a first-floor apartment and tried to shut the door - only the officer who got shot managed to get his foot in and kept them from doing so.

The officers were yelling "police" and to open the door. It was readily apparent to the officers that there was someone on the other side of the door attempting to close it and was struggling against the officers trying to open the door. At one point, the door opened enough for the officers to see inside the apartment, which was extremely dark, having no lights on. At that point, the officers observed a muzzle flash from the interior staircase and also hear the shot as it happened. Officer [Redacted] felt a stinging sensation to his left leg. The officers then backed out of the doorway and radioed for assistance.

Mack left the building not long after and was arrested. Martin holed up inside, giving up only after the SWAT team and a dog arrived, around 3:20 p.m.

Both were charged with armed assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a loaded firearm and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building.

Police seized the Mercedes and had it towed away as part of their investigation.
