Affordable apartments for seniors win approval on Leyland Street in Uphams Corner

The Zoning Board of Appeal today approved a non-profit group's proposal for a five-story, 43-unit apartment building for senior citizens at 9 Leyland St.

All of the apartments in the $20-million building - 41 one-bedroom units and 2 two-bedroom units - will be rented to seniors making no more than 60% of the Boston area median income, under the plans submitted by the Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corp. for what is now a vacant lot.

The building will have nine parking spaces as well as a first-floor community room intended for wellness classes and other programs for residents.

The BPDA board approved the proposal in July.
