State shuts Chinatown basketball/volleyball courts

MassDOT, which owns the Kneeland Street land that Reggie Wong Park sits on, announced today it's shut the park indefinitely due to Covid-19 concerns.

MassDOT’s temporary closure of the Reggie Wong Park on Kneeland Street is in conjunction with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) temporarily closing athletic fields and courts, such as basketball, tennis, handball, pickle ball, and bocce, throughout the state parks system effective March 24, 2020 until Tuesday, April 7, 2020, at which time the closure will be reassessed.

tennis is the one that can be most safely played, as a net separates the players. (Singles, not doubles.)

I see your game of tennis and raise you socially distanced bocce.

Bocce between two players requires zero interaction except the balls may come into contact with each other and the little white ball. Gloves can be work and white ball can be sanitized (or you get two.) You are on opposite sides of the pitch at any given time anyway.

I would say no to a game of four but even then you can distance and mark which ball is which. Due to its slow moving nature it should be easy enough to do.

I hadn't heard of pickleball. How many courts does DCR even have?

Pickleball can generally be played on many other courts, they just need a net. A lot of new courts, and retrofitted ones, design the layout so it can happen on tennis courts. I do not think there are many pickleball only courts out there. It is popular among seniors and others because it is low impact and easier to pick up then tennis. Although there are some competitive tournaments.
