The heat is on

Boston has declared a heat emergency for today and tomorrow, what with temperatures expected to climb into the 90s and the heat index (you know, it ain't the heat, it's the humidity) expected to get up near 100.

The city is opening cooling centers at 15 community centers between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day and notes all BPL branches have AC and that there are also 64 splash pads at Boston parks on which to stay cool.

This one isn't bad.. I got a short list of ear worm songs that I go 'omg noooo' when they play.

Go listen to Music Box Dancer by Frank Mills. You'll wanna stab your ears out because you'll never get the melody out of your head.

I beg that you heed Cybah's advice. This song is a kissing cousin of Vangelis' "Chariots of Fire"

Expect train breakdowns, people collapsing in unairconditioned train stations as they wait and wait and wait and wait with no seat to sit down on, and stalled trains in dark, hot tunnels.

The greatest jazz singer ever (in my not-so-humble opinion) was Ella Fitzgerald. You can hear her sing "It's Too Darn Hot" on YouTube.

(Sorry, I don't understand how links work here, the link tag seems to put the actual HTML in the message instead of creating a link, so you'll find the song here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlMWW4R1ZBM
…or just search YouTube.)

And if you're not familiar with Ella Fitzgerald… enjoy.

Not fun having to leave at 5pm in the midst of a severe thunderstorm. To say nothing of splashing outside.

I was biking home - and took cover at the farmer's market while the storm moved through. Bought some veg while the vendors were packing up.

Really been enjoying all the smoke, heat, and damaging storms they've brought us.

they're only a few years away from being plant food. They wont be here to see the fun that has yet to come.

The real thanks is to automotive makers and the car drives. If we didn't have such a car centric culture we might have been ok.

From here:

Since the entire transport sector accounts for 21% of total emissions*, and road transport accounts for three-quarters of transport emissions, road transport accounts for 15% of total CO2 emissions.

Most of this comes from passenger vehicles – cars and buses – which contribute 45.1%. The other 29.4% comes from trucks carrying freight.

So cars and buses produce 45% of the 15% that road transport puts out. That puts cars producing less than agriculture.

* The linked source uses data from 2018. The EPA, using 2021 data, says transport produces 24% of greenhouse gases. 2021 might be an odd period, because of COVID.

But the Koch Brothers have done some significant damage with their anti-climate lobbying, disinfo campaigns, and dark money operations.
