Firefighters are on scene; police have shut Centre Street between the Stop & Shop and Columbus Avenue.

On Washington Street just north of the Dedham line. So now parts of West Roxbury don't have water. As of 5:30 p.m., BWSC crews were still on scene working to restore service. At least water wasn't geysering out of the trench onto the street.

UPDATE, 11:15 p.m. Kerry Sweeney reports the water is back, but it's brown.

H/t Tim Sullivan.

BWSC workers at work in East Boston

This is the scene on Cottage Street in East Boston tonight. Kevin Tremko swears those are BWSC workers figuring out how to repair the damage from tonight's water-main break, but it's hard not to imagine it's really scientists trying to figure out what to do about some unspeakable horror unleashed on the unsuspecting neighborhood in a 1950s horror movie.

Flooded street in East Boston

Ellie shows us Cottage Street in East Boston, where a 10-inch water main just couldn't take it anymore tonight.

UPDATE: Not long after Ellie took the above photo, Kevin Tremko photographed the car in front of the SUV, which now looks like it's not going anywhere anytime soon: Read more.

A Silver Line sprinkler system went kablooie near Courthouse station. As of 5:40 p.m., the Fire Department was halting buses from entering the station, water was pooling to about a foot deep in the tunnel and a BWSC crew was on the way.

School Street was blocked overnight after a water main burst near Washington, but Tom Griffiths, who works right there, reports that around 7:30 a.m.

It's fine. All cleaned up, no traffic block.

Firefighters and police are at 564 Massachusetts Ave., where a cracked water main has put four feet of water into the basement and sent water bubbling up through the sidewalk outside.

UPDATE, 11:15 a.m. Water back on at 273/281 Summer.

Workers at several buildings in Fort Point and along Summer Street report a water-main break means no water for them. 374 Congress St., however, still has water.

Water main break in Fort Point in South Boston

People in parts of South Boston woke up this morning to little or no water pressure. LVRII photographed the Northern Avenue site of the water-main break that caused the problem.

The American Water Works Association, meeting right here in little old Boston, has named Boston's tap water the best tasting tap water in the country.

Coming in second was water from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, which is kind of odd, given that Boston's water is MWRA water, but, hey, that just means we're twice as good, right?

An overnight water-main break means Commercial Street is shut between Charter and Battery streets, CommuterBoston reports.

UPDATE: BWSC found the shut-off valve around 2:25 p.m. and police began letting traffic down Washington again. But traffic might be slow for awhile due to the ever popular residual backups - and DPW's need to clean up debris from the flood and put down sand for when all the water freezes.

The neighborhood's main road is now rolling in the deep thanks to a water main that turned into Swiss cheese hydrant that went berserk around 2 p.m. somewhere between Basile Street and Bexley Road, just north of Adams Park.

Boston MA - Water Pipe Break Floods Bowdoin Street & Area - 1/4/14

Another water main burst this afternoon, this time under Bowdoin Street on Beacon Hill, buckling the roadway and sending a flood down the hill onto Cambridge Street, which had to be shut as well. At least this time, no bus or truck got eaten.

Brian D'Amico, who took the video, also posted photos of the watery mess.

Take a look at Scott Parkinson's photo of a partially swallowed bus around 4 a.m. at Dorchester Avenue and W. Broadway, where a water main burst.

Adam reports:

This pothole has been patched over 100 times. The bump was a great reminder everyday that I was home in Southie.
