It was a shotgun shell, not a "bullet casing"

Mike Ball's son goes to Boston Latin Academy, which went into "safe mode" (as opposed to "lockdown") today:

The 14-year-old came one today with a little smirk, a twitch over the police at Boston Latin Academy. It seems some kid brought in a live shotgun shell and left it in a john.

By cracky, in my day, the punks would pull a fire alarm and we'd head outside and stare at each other for a half hour. Today's version may involve a phoned in bomb threat, or in this case, a puerile catalytic piece of rubbish. ...

It turns out that safe mode involved a police take over of the school. They bought in gun and ammo sniffing dogs. All the kids took their coats and backpacks into the hall next to their classroom. They stood their ground as the cops and dogs did their do. ...

Though, my PC rarely responds with guns and police dogs.

Is there a guns and dogs screensaver for safe mode?

I see that the Globe story subhead uses locked down, but they're pretty sloppy there. I saved the school robot call and she definitely tried to differentiate with that safe mode.

The headmaster is very nice, very smart and well respected by the students. It's too bad that they've had some trouble, like this and a fight at a school dance in the fall.

That written, I wonder how finely they slice incidents when the city cops have to come. Our in-home reporter said all the kids had to come out in the halls with their coats and backpacks. They ended up dumping these for canine and cop inspection in the hall. Then they returned to the classroom for about two hours. (In my kid's case, that's a triple dose of Latin.)

Imagine for a moment telling over a thousand always-hungry teens that they weren't getting lunch anytime soon.

Our kid says the dogs smelled a suspicious powder outside room 302. According to the papers, this was residue from some nail gun (bangety bang bang). They opened that locker. The sniffs and searches didn't turn up anything dangerous or illegal.

Everyone was, as the expression goes, safe, but it looks like Mrs. Aaronson has a PR problem.
