Train accident shuts down Providence line

Sitting on the 5:40 at South Station, they just announced that there was a collision at Canton Junction between a commuter rail train and a freight train. They're holding us at South Station until further notice.

Train 917 hit when a CSX boxcar rolled off sidetrack onto main line.

Buses?! They just told us to get off the train, that buses are on the way to replace service on the Providence - Stoughton line.

Copied off the scanner:

... Canton IC is reporting that there may be people on the train not able to walk off. Over 100 people at triage right now. ...

The Herald has a striking gallery of photos from the crash... none too gory

You can't directly link to it, but it's easy to spot at the moment. Top right of the page.

This and this may be worth watching for updates. One report says the commuter train was stopped when the freight car rolled into it.

Looks like Providence is running all the way through again, at least that's what the conductors are saying on my train'which is nearing Hyde Park. The Stoughton branch is still closed, with buses from Rt.128.

I was on the 919, which was stopped just short of Hyde Park, sent back to South Station (no stops at Ruggles or Back Bay) for connections to shuttle buses. Once at South Station, we were told to get on train 923 to 128, from whence shuttle buses. I got on the train at Back Bay at 5:20, and took over an hour to go *backwards* one station. It was another clusterf*** for the MBCR/MBTA.

Is it OK for me to link to my blog for the full story of my ugly trip home?

By all means!

I'd like to know the story behind this photo, which shows five Dedham firefighters pushing a Canton ambulance that had got stuck in the mud,

No mystery. It's mud season and the best access to the scene was an unpaved path off Culloden Dr., and emergency personnel from all over the area were called in to help. I saw ambulances from East Bridgewater and Norwell and cops from Milton directing traffic at Chapman+Washington.

The video here on this page is not being very friendly to Firefox 2.0.0.12 on Windows. Every visit for me to Universal Hub is crashing the browser. Is it a sign that FF is a train wreck? :-)

Technically, it looks like the flash plugin version 9.0 is not playing nice with the NECN video in combination with Firefox. Long live Internet Explorer 6!!

Weird because I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.12 on Windows and haven't seen a crash. I'll change the thing to a link.

Thanks. I'm really not 100% sure what the deal was. The offending library was NPSWF32.dll - which is "Adobe Flash Player 9.0" according to my error dump.

I reckon the Firefox web developer plugins, firebug, and flash had an argument and weren't getting along. Maybe they just need some time apart to settle their differences. :)
