Eastie residents to pier developer: Aw, poor baby

Whining from the would-be developer of the Portside at Pier 1 that the project might be unprofitable because strengthening the pier to hold all the condos will cost more than expected seemed to garner exactly zero sympathy from residents at a meeting on the project - as did Massport's contention that absolutely the only thing that would work there is a condo project.

a brown lot on the waterfront that every tourist can see from the downtown area. It's been a project that has been in the works since 1998 and was finally getting off the ground. It was supposed to bring back more vitality to the waterfront area of Eastie and now we're left with excuses from MassPort and the construction company...

It's a brown lot with large pilings sticking out of it. It's an eyesore, an eyesore right next to one of the city's nicest waterfront part (Piers Park...people really should check it out.) Besides, I can't imagine the engineers who worked on this project mislead the developers as to the cost of reinforcing the pier. It's just another case of a greedy developer finding excuses to stop a project (or more likely, to get funding from the city) due to the softening condo market. It's all about dollar signs people, lots of them, not few of them. Then again, by the time this thing would be open for residents, that market is likely to pick up. Soooooo frustrating.

Massport should not have allowed this to happen. There should have been some kind of penalty for delaying the project. We all have our datelines in our everyday work. Most of people would have been fired for this kind of problem. Why should they get away with it?
