Red Line to be shut between Alewife and Harvard Jan. 2-3

So workers can fix the tracks, the T advises. Regular service is scheduled to start bright and early on Jan. 4.

I thought the whole reason we didn't have 24x7 service was because of those precious hours needed for "maintenance."

Let me guess, they don't want to pay overtime to workers?

The problematic track between Harvard and Alewife is "direct fixation", meaning the rail is fastened to clips which are fixed to concrete slabs (there are no ties). If they have to do some concrete pouring to replace the base for the clips, they need more time than just 1 AM to 5 AM to cut the concrete, pour the new concrete, and let it cure/settle.

actually, this makes sense - I'd rather they do this work on a weekend when less people are affected than impact the weekday rush hour. And I'd rather they actually complete repairs than not do anything and have another derailment or caved-in wall or whatever. I think it's a good sign - that they're actually doing SOMEthing!

Yeah, all it took was people almost dying even though they (and we) knew that there were serious issues with that track.

It's disgusting that a crisis like that has to come up before the necessary corrections and/or repairs are made. If there were serious issues with that particular track, the MBTA staff should've moved swiftly to make the essential repairs before a crisis like that took place. What. is. wrong with people?
