A driver's request that a teen put out a cigarette on an MBTA bus led to a fight that ended with the bus crashing into a building on Dudley Street and leaving a pedestrian with his foot pinned underneath a bus tire.

Police say the crash at 389 Dudley St., around 3:15 p.m., was caused by kids attacking the driver after he told one of them to stop smoking on the bus. The Boston Fire Department reports it had to use emergency air bags, jacks and the Jaws of Life to lift the bus off the man whose foot got pinned under the bus's right front tire.

Looks like it plowed into the corner of the building containing "Best of the Bean" barber shop. Hopefully nobody was in the front window at the time.

In some countries (Italy) bus drivers have a plexiglass shield between them and the public. All they do is drive. Fare payment, crime, nuisance laws (loitering, smoking etc) are all handled by professional police officers.

If only our transit police road the bus instead of enjoying the sweet fumes of their idling SUV.

I'm fairly certain there aren't enough to put one on every bus. And if you want to put one on every bus, the costs would be astronomical.

Having cops in other vehicles, ready to respond to calls, is probably the more efficient option overall (albeit not in this case, I'll grant that.)

At each bag sniffing setup at subway stops there are six T officers. While the pay for the setups may come from the Feds these are nevertheless six officers assigned to sniff bags - and not assigned to riding buses and trains. If T police are charged with protecting riders and drivers then they need to be where they are needed.

Sniffing bags is not difficult. If the bags sniffers are truly needed (a debatable proposition) then the T could employ people solely for that job. Perhaps employ local police who enjoy working details. Granted this kind of detail might required them to do something other than sit in their cars or stand around just standing around, but that would free up T cops to do what they are supposed to do.

According to the TV news the pinned guy was one of the attackers. He fled and got pinned by the bus. On one station he accused the bus driver of intentionally pinning him.

MR DAVEY PLEASE PUT YOUR POLICE ON BUSSES WHERE THEY BELONG!
My brother who is a STATIE told me that when they had 80 cops under Bratton they rode busses in high crime neighborhoods, now they have 300 and no one rides busses and they all have take home cruisers.
