North End building swap could mean more room for Eliot School
By adamg on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 2:47pm
NorthEndWaterfront.com reports parents at the North End's only elementary school are planning a phone campaign tomorrow to try to convince city and school officials to expand the school.
But where would students go? The North Bennet Street School is looking at a possible swap in which it would move into the old city printing press and North Street police station and in exchange give the city its current four buildings.

How would a swap of buildings
How would a swap of buildings involving the North End's elementary school and the North Bennet Street School make more room for the Eliot School? Is the Eliot School looking to move from JP to the North End? I hope not!
Presumably the N. Bennet buildings are larger
Than the current Eliot School (which is in the North End already). Apologies if I wasn't clear, but the basic idea would be:
N. Bennet moves into the old printing building and fire station, the Eliot School moves into the old N. Bennet buildings and the city does, well, something with the old Eliot School.
I believe...
The plan is for Elliot to keep their old spot too. They aren't that far away, so it would make sense.
different Eliot School
There are two Eliot schools in Boston, believe it or not. The Eliot school on Eliot street in J.P. isn't going anywhere!
The Eliot school in the North
The Eliot school in the North End was where, in 1859, a teacher caned the hand of an Irish boy for half an hour because he wouldn't recite from the Protestant Bible in front of the class. The next day 300 Irish boys boycotted school. Violence was prevented when the School Committee ruled that only the teacher should read prayers.
Wow. Great history
Wow. Great history nugget.
Thanks.
Nice history
It also explains why we shouldn't have prayer in school.
yes but if those students had
yes but if those students had been able to carry a concealed weapon one could have stepped up and been the hero and prevented violence
