hub on wheels
The weird thing about Hub on Wheels is that its supposedly a charity event but they barely mention what the event is supporting - a program called technology goes home where low-income city families can get a netbook and some basic Internet training for $50.
I think that's the consequence of a less-than-stellar website
To your point, I think the charity aspect of the ride has taken a backseat in promotion of the event in the past few years. It definitely was more of a charity ride a few years ago -- now it's billed as Boston's Cycling Celebration first and foremost with a charity benefit as a bonus.
That said, at least for me, it's never been unclear to me in my 5 years of doing this ride that it's for the charity Technology Goes Home. But to be honest, HOW's website has been the same for years and it only provides bare-bones information -- it could use a little TLC and definitely great emphasis and explanation on what the fundraising/registration for the ride actually benefits.
