Report: Church leader admits misusing grant money

The Bay State Banner reports on the admission by the Rev. Gregory Groover amidst the continuing legal battle between his Charles Street AME church and OneUnited Bank, which wants to foreclose on it.

Groover is also a member of the School Committee, which he chaired until last year. The story fails to note that Banner owner Mel Miller sits on the bank's board of directors.

What are this guys qualifications for serving on the council? I appreciate he's active in his community, but if he can't manage a church, what basis does he have for working on the reform of a large, complicated school system?

Feel confident in having him oversee a school system with a budget of 937 million.

This is what kills me about the BSC.

If they were elected, then I'd understand having less than competent people on there because just because someone is a good local politician that doesn't mean they should run a school district. If we're going to have a committee appointed by the mayor, then he/she should at least have the ability to pick the best people for the job instead of catering to any particular interests.

I'm amazed that there was no oversight, either by the church (in the form of an audit) or from Lilly. That's A LOT of money to misappropriate. I'm also wondering why the church's board isn't demanding Rev. Groover's resignation.
