A fire that broke out shortly before 8 p.m. at at 40 Colchester St. was the apparent cause of death of an elderly woman found on the lawn outside by arriving firefighters.

Despite CPR by first responders, the woman was pronounced dead not long after her arrival at Carney Hospital in Dorchester.

Firefighters started searching the house for a second resident, but the man turned out not to be at home - he showed up at the scene, the Boston Fire Department reports.

Fire investigators, police detectives and the Suffolk County DA's office will conduct a joint investigation into the fire and the woman's death.

The fire department estimated damage at $150,000.

This is Boston's first fatal fire since a fire in Allston last April.
