Track trash fire near North Station shuts Orange Line

UPDATE :Firefighters extinguished the fire and left the tracks about 10:45 p.m

Around 10:35 p.m. Firefighters asked the T to cut power on the outbound side so they could douse a small trash fire about 100 feet past the platform; the T cut power in both directions.

Past performance is no guarantee of future results, but shouldn't the Orange Line immediatley shut for three days now?

Look on the bright side: A fire means the third rail must finally be working again.

Some fed up commuter was just trying to help thaw out the switches.

You know I think it is disgraceful for the T just to cancel service and don't even tell the people there is no more service. I stood at the platform at forest hill station with many others and children waiting on the last bus that never came and the T employees did not even have the respect to tell its riders there were no more buses. The mbta is a horrible system, horrible customer service and needs to be replaced. They have no respect for passengers...without us paying them it would not be no T and those ignorant workers would not have a job. I'm pissed

The extremely short-lived trash-fire-on-the-tracks snow-melting plan didn't have many believers, but at least they tried.

Now that they've tried it in a contained, weather proof location like the tunnel near North Station, hopefully they can apply what they've learned to the Braintree branch. A giant trash fire might be just what it needs!
