Cambridge Police report a man is under arrest for an incident around 8 a.m. that started as a fight in Central Square and ended with one combatant pistol whipped and his fellow fighter dragged behind a car for several blocks.

Police say officers responded around 8:12 a.m. to Pearl and Decatur streets for what at first seemed to be a hit-and-run crash.

Upon further investigation, it was learned that the victim was dragged by a dark Nissan following an altercation in Central Square. The two parties - driver and victim - are believed to be known to each other. A third party was pistol whipped and located along with the victim who was dragged by the suspect’s motor vehicle. A firearm was discarded out of a vehicle matching the description provided by witnesses and has been recovered by officers in the area of Allston and Pleasant Streets.

Both victims were taken to a local hospital and are expected to survive, police say.

Joekeem Nelson, 20, of May Street in Cambridge, was charged with armed assault to murder, illegal possession of a firearm and assault and battery with dangerous weapon.

Nelson was arrested last August on armed-robbery charges.

Innocent, etc.

Don't bring a gun to a car fight.

Based on the charges against the car driver (just added to the post), he was the apparent owner of the gun in question.

I was riding my bike on Mass Ave toward Boston just as this must have been unfolding. A marked SUV flew past me, then another, and then two motorcycles heading the other way, all with lights and sirens nonstop. Police and ambulances will usually go as fast as they safely can in their travel lane as other cars pull to the right, but the two SUVs were heading right down the middle of the street. I figured it had to be something really bad, and it looks like it was.

As a cyclist or pedestrian you always have to be paying attention to emergency vehicles zipping down the street -- no texting or listening to your headphones!

Violent felons should automatically have their license terminated. Anyone who lets such a person operate their vehicle needs to be aggressively charged as well.

with a stolen handgun in Somerville this past July and was back on the streets of Cambridge by April? Is that normal? What happened at the Somerville District Court?

So sick of this trash. Looks like this isn't the first time Joekeem Nelson has been arrested in area with a gun: http://cambridge.wickedlocal.com/article/20150804/news/150808889

What do we have to do to lock this guy up.
