Do Damage doing damage outside the baseball diamond

Paul Levy says he's sure the Sox, whom he loves, meant well, but that it's time to retire the Do Damage motto because its use is spreading in ways the Sox didn't intend:

I am a referee for high school soccer games and started to hear talk this fall of “doing damage” to the other team from some of the boys on the fields of Eastern Massachusetts. They did not always mean it in the sense that Alex Cora used the term. They meant it in terms of “taking out” other players. Of course, as the referee, I would be extra vigilant and discourage any such language or behavior. But my point is that many of these games already contain moments of excess competitiveness, driven by testosterone and yelling coaches. Do we really need the extra impetus of a slogan that can that carry the message of hurting someone else?

It can’t be that hard to conjure up a more positive theme that captures the inherent competitiveness of sports without violent overtones. And when our beloved Sox do well, let’s show that we are capable of expressing joy in a manner that uplifts.

Give me a break. Should we stop saying we BEAT them?
Or how about we DESTROYED them?
What we need to stop, is word police.

HIT a home run! Or even HIT the ball. That's violent and must be stopped.

The term Strike also has a violent connotation. To Strike is to Hit.....can't say that anymore.

And above all....BALLS. My god, how sexist are we to allow the term BALLS to be thrown around.

The only safe word in the sport is....safe. As in, safe space.

The Baltimore Orioles’ slogan this year was “Don’t Damage” and look where it got them!

Former BIDMC ceo Paul Levy who had his hospital sponsor the Red Sox, in this context.

Is this the same CEO Paul Levy who resigned and was fined heavily for having a relationship with a young female employee? Talk about damage! She'll never be the same.

A far-left Dukakis hack from the 1980's. The Peter Principle is about right if his endgame is officiating youth soccer, although I personally wouldn't want him around small children. Referee is about as high as he should go.
