Citizen complaint of the day: Annoying people in Boston parks

A disgusted citizen files a 311 complaint about the loose dogs at Millennium Park in West Roxbury:

During the past week, on two occasions, we were met with dogs off leashes. In one incident, the dog peed on our belongings while the owner frantically tried to catch him. We asked him to leash his dog, he told us to go fuck ourselves. The second incident occurred last night when a dog starting jumping on my kids. I yelled for the owner who was across the field unaware of what was happening. My child was unharmed but it was luck. I am a dog owner and have been disappointed by lack of oversight.

Across town, another disgusted citizen files a 311 complaint about early morning screamers at Medal of Honor Park in South Boston:

Boot Camps at 6am should not be allowed. Shouting at a group while exercising at this hour in a city park?? How is this allowed. Do they have a permit?

Complaining about dogs off leashes peeing on stuff and jumping on kids: legit complaint

and I will scream under your window at 6 am. If you live near a park, you should be able to expect only quiet activities at 6 am. Even construction, ever so important to our city, can't begin until 7.

2. I would ask them (you) to please quiet down as I am trying to sleep (newsflash: that works 99% of the time)

3. If that didn’t work after asking them twice nicely and a third time not so nicely, I’d ask them to keep it down a forth time or I’d make them keep it down.

4. I’d line the field with itching powder, OC, maybe a little paint? Then watch the aftermath!!

5. I can’t call the police because they would come and probably shoot and kill them.

You shouldn't have to ask in the first place.

Ah, the good old days, when there were noise laws and one could peacefully sleep in till 6 or even (heaven!) 7 am. But look on the bright side--if you lived in a mixed-use zoning area (one- and two-family residences with a long-term care home in the middle), you could look forward to, for example, being abruptly awakened at 5:45 am as dumpsters are changed out. Or by the carpet cleaning company coming at 1:15 am, taking carpets out of the facility, then steam cleaning and drying them on the driveway. (Ask me how I know.)

Is this boot camp a recent phenomenon? I think a lot of gyms are trying to hold classes outdoors if possible these days.(So maybe someday, these folks will go back to the gym.) Too bad you don't have a yoga class under your windows, though.

There are no houses near the park. My old high school is a stones throw away. How is the boot camp bothering this person.

Millennium park dog owners are terrible. My senior citizen mother was attacked by an unleashed dog and i was knocked down by one when i was running there another time. No enforcement at all and filling 311 requests was useless.

Agree 100% with this - they're the special people...not my dog. Unfair to folks and other dogs - but unlike the dogs....they don't give a shit

Millennium is a great resource for residents in the SW quadrant of the city from bird watchers to dog walkers to families to soccer players. The off leash dog exercise thing, like at Fallon Field, is ridiculous. If your dog needs to run, put on your sneakers and start running. Or do like the guy I saw up there the other day getting towed around on a skateboard by his big doggo. It's not on us to accommodate your dog.

Remember how some jerk let their dog kill a blue heron in the Arbs? Same exact people at heart.

People who want off leash access can organize to request a specific facility for off leash recreation. That park is pretty huge.

Keep off-leash dogs out of parks.

The good dog owners will use it, same as leashes. The selfish / bad dog owners will just do what they want and get hostile when called on it.

No, I'm 100% sure they're from Westwood. Or possibly Norwell. Maynard maybe. Southborough for sure.

have requested that a dog park be created in the area. But we tax payers are ignored. I would love to let my dog off leash (I don't because she likes to chase squirrels) but there is nowhere in WR with a fenced dog park for my dog to run. If people don't like dogs off leash, please contact elected officials and ask that dog parks be created to help stop this issue.

That's one of the things a responsible adult takes onto consideration when buying or adopting a dog: is it fair to bring this dog into my cramped urban apartment esp. since I live in an area with no parks which permit off-leash dogs? It's not rocket science.

Ah, much like children, don't have a pet unless you can properly care for it. It's your responsibility, not the public's.

You the irresponsible dog owner were ignored.

You are correct. There has been a years-long organized effort to create a fenced dog park as part of a renovation of DCR land near the Hyde Park/Readville/Dedham border (Stoney Brook), along with additional walking trails etc for the general public, at the site of a former school/park for handicapped children. At the moment, the name of this place is escaping me. But it has been closed for years, and can never be reopened, because the Americans with Disabilities Act now requires that public accomodations must be accessible to all citizens. But only vandals can use this area, because the state has not allowed any development to take place AT ALL on the site--as I understand it, because the local representative in the state legislature (Angelo Scaccia) is opposed to it, because...of something illogical.

People who own dogs are taxpaying citizens too.

Edited to add: Came to mind after hitting "post"--it was the Thompson Center.

There have been reports that it may not have been a Blue Heron that was killed. Some experts have said there was no way a dog could catch a Blue Heron. But I don't know for certain. I am sure though plenty of birds at the Arbs have been killed by humans leaving their trash...

Tax paying dog owning citizens have tried to get large areas of space for off leash dogs & have been met with "I don't want my taxes going to your things but we'll gladly have you pay for our playgrounds, schools, etc."

It's all part of it people...we pay for each others shit whether we use it or not.

Millenium should have off leash hours or areas. It is big enough. FFS if Brookline has been doing off leash hours for over a decade so can Boston.

I have been walking by Fallon Field almost daily b/c of C19 and you know what I see? Barely anyone using it. Even during non Covid times it is not overly used. What that tells me is that Fallon can also have off leash hours.

Though I do not agree with people not having control of their dog / picking up after their dog I am sick of the blame game on dogs. You know how much garbage there is in this area? I hear very few people lose their minds over that. Coffee cups, wrappers, masks, paper bags, plastic bags, ciggies, bottles, cans, diapers, juice boxes, etc. Where is the rage over that?

Well said.

The problem with off leash hours is that while many dog owners pick up their dog waste, a large minority don't. Source - dog shit all over Millennium and Fallon field. Same deal with the Arbs where 'friendly' dogs knock kids down all the time or just scare them by running around loose.

If you want a big dog that needs a lot of space, by a house with a big yard. Don't want the responsibility, don't get a dog! Or just walk your dog on a leash - why is that so hard for people? I walk my (small) dog on a leash every day. It's fine.

$800,000 I can use to buy a house with a big yard?

need as much exercise as some other dogs. Some dogs have a lot more energy than others and you can't tell what the dog is going to be like as an adult when it's still a puppy - especially when it's an unknown mix breed. Trust me. Had I known my dog was going to have this much energy, I may have looked at another one when adopting. But my dog is part of my family and I would NEVER give it up because of its energy level or any other reason. Dog parks not only allow dogs to run but also allow for socialization which is also important for raising a good dog.

I'm confused why you think a leash will determine whether a dog owner picks up after their dogs. If there's already dog poo all over, clearly some people are going to be idiots regardless. So your solution is... punish everyone by not allowing any off-leash hours even though a leash doesn't pick up poo for you?

Yeah, that makes no sense.

Dogs are not people. Please do not equate a dog with a child. And no, i do not want to pay for your pet to have a dog park. I dont ask you to pay for the maintenance, repair, and parking for my car, why should i have to pay for sane for your pet?

They’re is no excuse for irresponsible dog owners letting their dogs off leash in public parks. Until my cocker spaniel passed in May, we had at least one dog for over 30 years. For their own safety, I never let my dogs off leash in an urban area, including parks. Years ago, I let my dogs run free in the Plainville woods until I learned that coyotes were making a comeback (love coyotes). My mother and sister often walk at Millenium Park and say off-leash dogs are a problem, along with bicycle riders. My Mom said there are signs indicating pedestrians only, but people ignore them. My mother sees families with kids unloading bikes and was almost hit by a kid on a bike. Furthermore, law-abiding people walking with or without their dogs on leash should not have to worry about loose, possibly aggressive dogs running up to them. It’s not safe for anyone. If the dog owners are too stupid to know enough to leash their dogs they should be fined. Those interested in solving the problem (I am not a Boston resident, but my family has lived in West Roxbury since 1986) should contact Boston Police Dept. and Boston Animal Control and ask for them to patrol the park and fine violators. I love bike riding and dogs, but am concerned about family’s safety. We’d also be doing the loose dogs a favor by encouraging their owners to walk them safely in leash.
Sincerely,
Mary Ellen Manning

I would love to run with my dog but it I tried running, I would not be able to walk anymore because of my knees. But maybe I'll try the skateboard idea. I'm sure there's no way I'll fall and break my arm or get a concussion.
