When I was a new driver in the early 80s, I was driving in the tunnel and the speed limit is 35 before you come to a curve. I was going a little faster and found myself needing to slow down or I'd hit the wall.
Yeah. Speed was definitely a factor.

It wouldn't be surprising if speed was a factor in this crash, but...
... O'Neill Tunnel wasn't open until something like 20 years after what you're talking about.

If memory serves, the speed limit there was 30 mph, unlike the elevated section of the Central Artery which was signed for 35. It's still in use for the southbound lanes of 93.
