Teach the children well

If you're the parent of a pre-schooler who lives in Boston's West Zone (Roslindale, JP and West Roxbury, more or less), there's a new school to check out: the Boston Teachers Union School, a K-8 pilot school just approved by the School Committee. It's due to open next year, will be sorta, kinda charter-schoolish (think Lyndon School in West Roxbury), only still overseen by BPS, but run by the teachers' union. Click on the link for info on open houses in December and January at the site of what will be the school next fall.

Does anyone know anything about the car that got stuck on the track between the Harvard Ave and Griggs Street stop on the Green B line last night? No one's reported anything but there was for sure a car on the tracks and lots of cops/firetrucks....

Not all local biotech researchers working on cures for cancer, chronic diseases

Ryan McBride interviews the CEO of a Cambridge start-up seeking to use the full weight of modern science against the scourge of frizzy hair:

... The substance, Robillard says, combats frizz by both coating porous hair shafts, preventing water from penetrating them, and by smoothing over hair cuticles to prevent surface friction. He argues that polyflouroester prevents frizz better than silicone used in other products because its molecules' smaller size enables them to fit into tiny pores in our hair that silicone molecules cannot get into. ...

Who would have thought college students were bad for a bar's business?

The Berkeley Beacon reports the Gypsy Bar on Boylston Street bar is complaining about chain-smoking, loitering Emerson students clogging up the sidewalk in front of its doors:

... Though no official report was filed, Emerson Police Chief George Noonan said he would like to see Emersonians respect the wishes of the college's neighbors. Officers have begun asking students to move out from the storefront.

The problem, said day manager Tanya Cavazza, is when students don't move even after she and the delivery people ask. ...

The paper quotes students who basically say, tough, the bar sucks:

... Students interviewed said they didn't care if the managers were complaining about them smoking in front of their door, since the people who go to the bar are equally disruptive to the Emerson community.

"Well, we're complaining about assholes blocking the street, getting drunk and [getting] in fights," said junior theatre studies major Brian Tweedy as he stood in front of the Gypsy Bar's doorway. "[Emerson] should give us somewhere that's convenient to smoke." ...
