UPDATE: Delvin Dixon, 40, of Charlestown, was arraigned on a charge of vandalism this afternoon. He was released on personal recognizance, but ordered to stay away from the Common until his case is resolved, the Suffolk County DA's office reports.

Somebody with a less than reverential view towards the past - not to mention Matthew Broderick - snapped off Robert Gould Shaw's sword from the 54th Massachusetts memorial across from the State House this morning.

State officials report contractors will begin prepping the Longfellow Bridge on Saturday to remove the two remaining towers as part of the overall bridge reconstruction project.

Don't worry, seasoning fans: The state says, as with the other two towers - and unlike that decorative railing a few years back - the towers will be put into storage so they can be replaced once the bulk of the repairs to the bridge and the realignment of the traffic/bicycle/pedestrian lanes is finished.

A manhole fire around 5:30 p.m. at Mt. Vernon and Walnut streets means a shutdown of the intersection for about 90 minutes as firefighters douse the flames and Eversource repairs the damage.

The Friends of the Public Garden board has a simple message for Boston 2024: Get offa their lawns.

The park advocacy group, which also looks after the Common, says it's against Boston 2024's proposals to build a 16,000-seat beach-volleyball stadium on the Common and to use Charles Street and part of the Public Garden for a marathon and bicycle races.

Charles Circle crash scene

The crash scene this afternoon - the Coca-Cola truck was the one involved.

A woman apparently walking against the light was struck and killed by a tractor trailer in Charles Circle this afternoon.

Witnesses reported that the woman, 68, was crossing Cambridge Street towards the Liberty Hotel when hit around 1:30 p.m., according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, which adds:

Emergency medical technicians from an ambulance company were in the immediate area and stopped to assist. The woman was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital a short distance away, where she died of her injuries.
