George Herbert Walker Bush
George Herbert Walker Bush, a conservative Republican, resigned his membership in the NRA because the organization offended his sense of decency and honor.
Just a few weeks ago, 42 Republicans and 4 Democrats joined the NRA to oppose an expanded background check bill and a bill that would make gun-trafficking a serious federal crime. These bills would help stem the flow of illegal guns from weak gun law states to strong gun law states, and put a dent in the epidemic of gun violence in cities like Boston and Chicago. No one has the right to own a gun illegally, nonetheless the NRA opposed the bill and so did most Senate Republicans and four Senate Democrats. It's a setback in the movement for more gun safety in America. Demand action.
1995- how times have changed
He resigned in 1995.
Man , back in the 80's and 90's i thought Reagan was the devil and H.W. his underling.
They're looking like princes now compared to the current crop of politicians on both sides.
Bush the elder will do in history as a stand up guy.
And Nixon, if he ran on his
And Nixon, if he ran on his '68 policies on the 2016 ticket, would be such a liberal Democrat that he'd never make it through the Ohio and Pennsylvania primaries. Oh how the times have changed.
Nixon was a big time
Nixon was a big time government interventionist. Probably the biggest one on the Republican ticket since Hoover. Anyone remember price controls and all the other assorted wackiness which only made inflation worse?
Nixon was a pragmatic politican first, Republican second
Nixon was a pragmatic politican first, Republican second. When the Ohio river caught on fire from flammable pollution, he formed the EPA. Bush on the other hand was a Republican. He resigned his membership from the NRA and that was decades ago. A lot of people have no sense just how radical Republican social and economic policy has become.
Nixon and pragmatic in the
Nixon and pragmatic in the same sentence? Hell hath frozen over.
yep, because all these
yep, because all these shootings are the fault of legal gun owners and criminals are always thwarted by laws.
You're Right
We should drop all our OUI laws because the percentage of people who drive drunk today compared to 50 years ago is, though much smaller, still above zero. And we should probably just make murder legal because people still kill each other intentionally (usually with guns, by the way).
