Postal Service doesn't even want to think about what happens if they can't find replacement space for Kenmore post office
By adamg on Fri, 05/25/2018 - 8:54am
The Boston Sun reports the USPS is looking for space to replace the current post office, due to be replaced by a new office building; an official acknowledges it's rough going due to the difficulties of finding a large space in a tight real-estate market.

Lucky for them, they have a real estate specialist for UPS working on it.
Reality Check:
USPS, actually, does A LOT of work for UPS, FedEx, and other private package delivery companies, all of whom lack USPS's massive resources.
And for dedicated Democratic Party members:
The APWU is one of the top $contributors$ to the party and individual Democratic campaigns.
i really don't understand the
i really don't understand the people who hate the post office...i mean, i enjoy sending and receiving cheap mail, in every sort of weather, from around the country and world for basically free
the UPS is arguably the ideal
the UPS is arguably the ideal government program, by conservative standards - they pay completely for themselves (get no federal budget), leverage partnerships with private business, value engineer to keep costs low and efficiency high, provides a service for which there IS no private competition (UPS and FedEx are both on record as having no interest in day to day letter carrying)....
.... and yet certain parties in this country still despise them, because they're still "big government" and still provide a great living for blue collar workers. the chicanery with requiring them to pre-budget for all possible future pensions, now or eternal, just goes to show that anti-agency hate is usually anti-worker hate.
USPS?
I think you must mean USPS not UPS
Wealthy, corrupt Republicans want to profit from privatizing it
So they sabotage it with unusual pension funding mandates, and rile up their voting base to hate it. That's their voting base who could use the decent jobs of USPS rather than the Amazon-type exploitation that the privatized replacements would inevitably have.
provides a service for which
Not surprising, considering competing against them is illegal.
Meaning? These are the only two entities in the entire country who might want to compete with the USPS?
And yet the USPS has to use a
And yet the USPS has to use a UPS specialist to find them a new building.
Am I the only one who thinks
Am I the only one who thinks it's odd that we have a "building boom" but we can't find space for a basic community need? Should city planners consider these issues when they approve projects? They are adding housing in that area. People will need a post office. Why was that part of the approval?
What I find tragic is that
What I find tragic is that the USPS leases space instead of owning it.
Most people have little use
Most people have little use for a post office in 2018
Boston University
That post office exists primarily due to BU.
I'm surprised that BU isn't helping them find someplace or setting them up with a lease in one of their buildings.
The same claim can be made
The same claim can be made for all city services. If it is only for bu hey should take care of it. The point is there is more than bu there and more housing is planned for rich people. Rich people need their Amazon toys NOW.
One not for profit has to help out another?
BU is doing plenty enough for the Harvard ROTC, I'd think. Maybe the post office should move across the river, by your logic.
Um huh?
That's pretty non-sequitur of you.
BU is a very large landholder in the area. It is also the primary beneficiary of the existance of the facility.
You need to revisit the concept of logic if you don't think it would be logical for BU to act in its own self interest here.
You never mail packages?
I got to
Staples for that. They actually have plenty of parking too..
Re-read the article
It's not just a post office, it's also a postal distribution center. Pretty essential to the neighborhood.
And
It is a passport location that issues passports, and also they hold packages for everyone in the neighborhood.
The next nearest post office to that area is the one on Mass Ave under the Church Park Apartments, or the one in Allston Village. Both of which are inconvenient for people who live in that neighborhood.
The post office / passport
The post office / passport acceptance situation is pretty dumb.
When you renew your passport, you basically have to pay $35 to have a postal employee take your old passport, your application for a new passport, and your photo. They look at your photo, say "yep, it's you", stuff it into an envelope, and mail it to the State Department.
Oh, and they only take appointments for that 9am-3pm on weekdays. And for your kid's passport, both parents have to show up, even if you're renewing one that the kid already has.
The whole process takes less time at the post office counter than it takes for the lady in front of you to discuss and think over all the service options for the package she's mailing.
umm hello!
Ever been to a post office lately? Always a line - so yes, there is still a need...
City planners are like jumbo shrimp
Oxymorons
At least in this city planning is "you wanna build?"
How tall?
Imagine if
The post office didn't have to fund pensions 75 years in advance. There's literally no (expletive) point in that.
Republicans are trash. The USPS is about the only federal government function that's any good.
Meh. If they can use eminent
Meh. If they can use eminent domain, they should condemn air rights over the Pike.
there's still an empty parking lot across the street
Wouldn't that be the ideal place to build a replacement post office (and other stuff above it)?
I used this post office a lot when I was an MIT student living a half block away.
BU is squatting on that land
BU is squatting on that land and doing nothing with it.
shared problem
Initially read the headline wrong, as Kendall is also losing it's space come November....
