phony $100's
Had a guy show up at my house last weekend to buy a $50 item I advertised on Craigslist. Offered me a $100 bill. I told him I lacked sufficient change. He offered to take my check for the balance, which I declined. The guy (a young Russian)then said he would be right back after breaking the $100. I'm still waiting. It dawned on me after he left that he just wanted the info off my check for identity theft purposes. Had he been more persuasive, I would have been out $100, the item and my identity. Be careful out there!
Identity theft?
Could have been just plain ol' theft theft.
He gives you a worthless counterfeit bill. You give him item worth $50.00. You write him check for $50.00. He cashes (pseudonymous bank account). He withdraws money. At the end of the day, he has your thing and your money, and you have a wee green piece of paper.
Sounds like it might be identify theft to me,
if the guy is given a check, he gets the person's info, including the bank account, which he wipes out, and can ultimately get hold of the victim's sensitive personal info as well. Scary indeed!
Ouch!!
This kind of grisly incident has re-enforced my decision to never, ever advertise anything on Craigslist or anything like that. Thanks for the reminder, aging cynic. I have resolved to stay off of Craingslist.
I got nailed not too long ago.
With 4 fake hundreds, and a 20. They looked pretty good for phony bills.
