In the midst of a deadly pandemic, it's time to remind Bostonians to live long and prosper, Spock's daughter and Captain Kirk say
Julie Nimoy, Leonard's daughter, today proposed erecting a 25-foot-high memorial in Boston to her father, in the form of the "live long and prosper" hand gesture he made famous.
It will honor @TheRealNimoy and will be a symbol for peace and tolerance worldwide. Dad would be so happy that this positive message could resonate with people for yrs to come.
Nimoy did not suggest a specific location for the memorial to the West End native and English High graduate, but a logical choice might be outside Beacon Hill's Vilna Shul, where, the ark in the former synagogue features the now familiar gesture from back in the day when it was an ancient Jewish religious symbol - one that congregation leaders made during services.
Also jumping on the Live Long and Prosper in Boston Campaign: William Shatner, who tweeted today:
This needs to happen! Leonard was very proud of his Boston roots.

Magoo sez
Sweeeeeetness so yes yes yes. Magoo sez this da bombdiggity. Magoo.
No.
No.
Yes
Yes. Live long and prosper, bro
For today only
Yes
What's not to like?
Yup
Yup.
Why?
I'm sure Nimoy was a good guy and and all that but why exactly should we build a statue to Mr. Spock? Other than he played a character on a short lived TV show that some people are over-obsessed about, to the point that they can't separate fiction from reality. Leonard Nimoy should have a nice plaque dedicated to him in the West End, this giant prop belongs in Disney.
Or Bobby Orr?
He excited a lot of people due to his hockey skills. Are his hockey skills continuing to bedazzle us? Maybe on sports reruns (sports reruns? few care).
Nimoy's love for his home and city were clear. He continued to engage with the world, his fans, and even with the noble ideals that his Spock character.
Following the rationale of the criticism of a sculpture honoing Leonard Nimoy I offer a comment about a certain scuplture that offers a secular sanctification a fellow who recently (supposedly paid to) endorsed a racist rapist for the White House.
That sculpture sanctifying him at the Garden would be fine in some minor hall of best hockey players. Not at a prime public place.
Whataboutism is a useless rabbit hole. Resist if you can.
I fully expected someone to bring up Crispus Attucks, who deserve but does not have. Did not anticipate the negativity of someone complaining that some who does but should not, but I should have. Your remarks seem to acknowledge that some people should not have statutes in their honor for dubious reasons. "2 wrongs don't make a right" is something we tell little kids, but I need to invoke it here. Again, I'm sure he was a nice guy but "he loved his City" and "I liked the philosophy of his fictional character" (written by others) gets you a nice plaque near your birthplace. I wouldn't be surprised if there already was one.
"Nimoy's love for his home and city were clear."
Yes and unlike Bobby Orr, he ain't with us anymore. So, put up a statue to represent him. Fine by me.
You must be new around here and I mean Boston, not uhub. You suggest the statue be removed because he endorsed Donald Trump for re-election?
First, the racist rapist, as you call him has been endorsed by...Mike Tyson, Kanye West, kid rock, (um white guy, sorry), Jimmy McMillan, Terrell Owens, Ice Cube (maybe some pull back I dunno), Herschel Walker, Candace Owens, Pastor Mark Burns, Diamond and Silk, um, I missed a few.
Oh, Lil Wayne. There's a 50 Cent thing going on but since the cheap slut Chelsea Handler promised him a piece (and there's a quote by her...) to recant, he might just go all Worldy.
Steve Harvey.
Isiah Washington.
Stacey Dash.
Bobby Orr paid for his endorsement? Bullshit. Where the fuck you get off saying that? He paid for the ad himself.
Racist rapist indeed. He's done more actual good for people than you ever will.
Ugh
Cheap slut? Jesus, man. This term is still ok in 2020?
Parody trolling
That list of jackoffs? Ain't making the rapist look good. Lol.
This has to be a parody trolling post.
"He's done more actual good for people than you ever will."
Citations needed.
Trump has demonstrated his
Trump has demonstrated his racism over and over and over. Now we have several women coming forward and accusing him of rape. At least Biden had the decency to not parade Trump's victims during the debates.
But then accusations are not facts. Just as the accusations against Clinton were never proven - although Trump the Racist Rapist played that card to get 270 Electoral College votes.
I must have hit a nerve for you to write "Where the fuck you get off saying that? He paid for the ad himself."
How do you know the money came from Bobby Orr? Do you keep track of his bank account(s)? We know Trumpers' will resort to lower than low tactics to win. The entire fiddle faddle over Burisma is proof.
But again, what benefit does it do for any person to endorse a man who is known for his hate and bigotry? As for the folks you claim endorsed him, well, they are endorsing hate and bigotry.
Why would a black man endorse a bigoted Trump? Well, why did a homosexual Jew persecute homosexuals and Jews during the life of one of Donnie's mentors, Roy Cohn.
Money and greed can cause all sorts of strange endorsements.
Leonard Nimoy?!
He grew up three blocks from here.
(Who put the bop in the bop shu bop)
"Nemoy?!"
Nemoy.
The Force is strong in this one.
Grasshopper.
Look
It's not my fault English vowels are bullshit.
I definitely got that
Well done.
Cue driving on Storrow at the
Cue driving on Storrow at the appropriate speed.
The location suggested in the drawing
looks a lot like West End Place.
As long as there is no cost
As long as there is no cost to the citizens of Boston.
No.
Yes to something commemorating Nimoy, but that design is awful.
This Is Fine
But I think most Bostonians are more accustomed to a hand gesture using fewer fingers.
You mean ...
"F*ck off and die"?
Hopefully
the city decides, not family or friends of a deceased famous person.
crispus attucks first; then,
crispus attucks first; then, this.
I thought the city already
I thought the city already had memorial or two commemorating him on the Freedom Trail?
Well, There Is The Monument To The Massacre On The Common
There is his marker in the Granary Burial Ground.
There was the Children's Center Named for Him.....
Perhaps we can put up a BIG ARSE monument to him only and put the names of the other 5 guys killed in teeny tiny little letters on the back of a manhole cover on Navuillus Street to fit the narrative being pushed to single him out as the only one knocked off that day.
By the way, a monument to Leonard Nimoy is dumb as hell. Are you all going to back monuments to New Edition, NKOTB, Norm Crosby someday? Perhaps a plinth for Ray Bolger in place of the pear in Edward Everett Square?
First it's Crispus. We know
First it's Crispus. We know a lot more factual information on Lenny.
thanks, i edited it.
thanks, i edited it.
Bad location idea.
The admittedly awkward angle of the hand itself makes utilizing the surrpounding sight lines important.
For instance, having it somewhere along the Charles on the Boston side where MIT or maybe the Museum of Science are visible between the fingers at the tips would make the very obvious connection of:
Boston>Nimoy>Spock>Science
While I 100% support the design the location is not logical, Captain.
OK, you got me
I'm not starry-eyed enough to not realize that there's no way in hell Beacon Hillians would support a 25-foot-tall hand on Phillips Street.
Maybe they could replace the Bobby Orr statue by the Garden instead.
Why replace Bobby Orr!?!
Just have him leaping through the fingers.
Good Idea
Although I'm generally leery of all these random memorials thrown up that frequently have nothing to do with Boston, I think this one (or an agreed upon variation thereof) is a good idea. Nimoy was proud of his roots and was a person of note from the unfairly demolished West End neighborhood.
There's not much space
For a 25-foot-tall memorial in front of Vilna Shul. There's a tiny little park across the street but it would take up almost the entire park.
I like the message
But the Memorial seems tacky.
How about a statue of her Dad instead.
Statute of Nimoy performing
Statute of Nimoy performing the gesture.
A statue of Nimoy
making the gesture would be far more appropriate than something that looks like Thing from the Addams Family.
That Thing statue
would look great at a T station/garage in Quincy.
Luv this!
Luv this!
Yes!
This would be so cool!
nice idea
wrong location
also wrong to desecrate a sacred space like the Vilna Shul
Desecration?
Actually quite appropriate. The original context of the gesture is Jewish. Even with the adoption of the term into a secular entertainment context the modern meaning is still close to the original meaning.
Why 25 feet tall? Make it
Why 25 feet tall? Make it bronze and 4' tall so kids can climb on it.
I am all for a statue commemorating Nimoy
But how many sculptures of disembodied hands can Boston really support?
Enough to count on one hand.

Park Street Hands
I'm still trying to make sense of those giant disembodied hands stuck on or near the ceiling at Park Street under. What the heck are those for?
Jeeesus!
Jeeesus!
Those hands are the first thing
I thought of when I initallly read this piece.
Art
Art for arts sake back when the MBTA had money for that kind of stuff. Just about every indoor station got something. Forest Hills Station has boomerang mobiles.
I'm with the Nimoy statue making the gesture somewhere in the West End crowd.
How about near the Charles Bank Playground?
And the funding for this
And the funding for this comes from?
same place
Same place the LONG over due Bill Russell statue came from. Private investors.
hand gesture
The hand gesture may be ancient in origin but it is still very much part of contemporary Jewish liturgy.
If we're going to place a monument to Mr. Spock
then we also need a memorial to all the "He's Dead Jim" ensigns who perished in the first three minutes of each episode. Perhaps we could call it "The Tomb of the Unknown Star Trek Actors."
A giant red shirt.
Yeah, I could go for that.
They weren't unknown
Kirk went to the academy with all their fathers.
Nimoy Memorial in Boston
Clearing up some concerns and misinformation about the proposed Nimoy Memorial:
It will be in a privately owned West End location yet to be determined. The Vilna Shul location is too small , and on a narrow street in a densely settled section of Beacon Hill , which is no longer considered part of the West End as it may have been before Urban renewal in the 1950's.
The project has been in discussion for five years since Leonard Nimoy died , and has been supported exclusively by private donations from dozens of citizens of Boston and people who have ties here . There will be no request of funds from the taxpayers of Boston.
There are very few memorials to native born Bostonians in the Arts. John Singleton Copley, no patriot and a Tory, fled Boston for London on the eve of the revolution never to return. Edgar Alan Poe left Boston despising the city. But Leonard Nimoy frequently returned to Boston to support charitable causes such as the Boys and Girls Club, as well as through his Foundation and national philanthropic organizations.
The universally recognized salutation "Live Long and Prosper", which was conceived from his formative memories of Boston, the city he loved, is reason enough to establish his Memorial.
adding a sister and a brother
adding a sister and a brother was already weird enough.
