Those mean Brookline cops at it again

Brookline Police continue to patrol opposition strongholds near Boston University, and managed to file this report from Thatcher Street, shortly after midnight yesterday:

Police on patrol witnessed two young men carrying a 30 pack of beer while walking down the street, when police stopped the subjects to inquire about proof of age it was revealed neither was yet 21. Both subjects will be summonsed to court for Minor in Possession of Alcohol.

You know that whenever they stop a 22 year old with a 30 pack of beer, it doesn't make the blotter, right? You also know that whether it's a 10 year old or a 100 year old carrying a 30 pack of beer it doesn't violate the quality of life to do so, right?

I wonder if people happy with this latest police ramp-up think that speed traps on the highway netting speeders means that eventually nobody will speed on the highway either.

There's nothing in that report that says the two young men had anything to do with BU. In fact, there's a large number of state subsidized housing in that block (not student territory).

You're right, the PD blog post doesn't say anything about the BU-ness of the two guys and I didn't say they were BU students. However, that is right in the middle of the area BU students are complaining about:

In the meantime, have the police found the losers who accosted that woman at the T-stop or broke into the woman's apartment to sexually assault her - both taking place near Coolidge Corner not that long ago.

Let the BU Coeds drink themselves into oblivion. Student conduct is not something new (and also not limited to off-campus at Boston University), so why all of the hoopla now? Could someone with some influence be complaining?

Meanwhile, don't the aggrieved students have something better to do ... like study? Like work to pay for their lodging and tuition? Like, say, intern to build their career? Maybe even do some housework given their domestic status?

Maybe MIT was different, but I don't remember ever having so much time on my hands to party AND fight for my right to party.

Seriously guys - that whole Beasty Boys song wasn't meant to be a national anthem!

I think it's wrong to keep saying that this is edging closer to war. The students at BU who are working to smooth this over aren't saying it's wrong to be arresting people who are committing crimes.

The police should continue to do so, and continue to issue summonses to people who are breaking the law. The problem is that there are innocent students who aren't actually doing anything wrong who can no longer sit out on their front stoop and talk to a friend or smoke a cigarette without the police shuffling them inside.

After you smoke on the stoop, you don't throw the cigarette butts onto the ground, do you? I see a lot of cigarette butts on the sidewalks, and wish the smokers, whoever they are, wouldn't litter.
