I'm feeling fancy, so granola-crusted French Toast for dinner on Wednesday? The peapod delivery person is arriving shortly. Planning ahead the lazy way.
How do you like peapod? It it worth dealing with? I tend to have a hard time making to the store and am always running low on everything that I need and have been thinking about taking the easy road and getting peapod but am not sure if its worth whatever they will charge me to deliver...
I'm home with a toddler and I don't drive. During the winter, it has really saved my life. You can find coupon codes for free delivery sometimes, which means there's really no extra cost to justify. The drivers are pleasant and they bring the bags right into the kitchen. It's awesome.
I will have to remember that for the once a month/2 months that Im just too bogged down with running around to even think straight.
Honestly I would pay someone to do my shopping for me if all I had to do was pay for it in advance and just pick it up at the front of the store (hey drive through would be even better!) As a young male Ive always felt like the women in the grocery stores were overly aggressive, especially towards people (like myself) that they dont feel belongs in the fruit aisle sizing up apples, and it is very stressful for me after a 10 hour day at work to deal with that.
Stop and Shop, Demoulas/Market Basket in multiple locations for both north of Boston. They are just very aggressive and quite nasty at times, especially when its busy.
On the other end of the spectrum is Shaws which is much nicer, although its also a pricier place to shop and is less crowded.
As for what exactly they do its mostly the evil eye, the "I have to get into that one little spot your blocking me from, you gotta move move move" you move out of the way, they look and then move on, and again your in the way. Theres also the person with the phalanx of kids on either side of the cart you could never get by, and of course the ankle nipper who while your standing in line at the checkout will continuously hit your ankles with her cart. The other weird thing with me, is no matter how I am dressed at least one person thinks I work for the store and seems absolutly puzzled when I say, nope just shopping here myself, find your own damn mustard.
For $6 you can order on the web from Johnnie's Foodblaster and pick it up at the store. They deliver now too.
Might save those ankles ...
I don't do the crazy times. I shop as late in the evening as possible because I can't deal with it otherwise. I was pleasantly surprised that Market Blaster in Somerville was NOT a insane asylum moshfest on Thursday night when I had to get the supplies for my son's birthday party, yet it was well stocked. I did have to draw a parent's attention away from a magazine long enough to notice that her toddler kid had taken that plastic bag she was given to play with and pulled it over her head.
That's exactly it. "The Super Bowl" is trademarked and the NFL aggressively enforces it. However, nobody's come out with an event called The Big Game yet, so that's what you mostly hear about from all those who haven't paid the NFL big bucks to earn the right to be The Official (beer, sandwich, backscratcher, cat litter, window pane, nail clipper, etc.) of Super Bowl MMXCMMXCLAMSXIVVIVI. You know.
Smaller stores sometimes flount it, but if the NFL catches on, boy howdy there'll be heck to pay.
I was an early adopter and after being held up for tips a couple of times by the delivery guys (at the time there was a prominent NO TIPPING notice on the website), i decided it was more pleasant to go fetch my own groceries, despite deliveries being arguably more efficient overall.
how are things in that regard now?
is the writer below (with baby, no car) one of those people who is immune to delivery guy stick-ups for a cash handout, and automatic tipper, or just a grocery customer who hasn't experienced this?
I tip $5 on my peapod orders. I consider tipping in this instance to be a luxury tax, much like when I tip cabbies or when my son has been super messy in a restaurant. These nice people are providing me a service I could otherwise perform myself were I not so harried/cold/lazy/swamped for time.
Is getting his fedora and trench coat ready so he can stand in the Channel 5 parking lot, pick up some snow and tell us how powdery it is (speaking of Ed, are things so bad at Channel 5 they can't afford to buy him a comb?).
And who has Worcester duty these days? Just wouldn't be proper weather coverage without somebody standing by the side of some hilly road in Worcester talking to motorists trying to either get up the hill or stop sliding down the hill.
I'm just glad Al Kaprielian isn't worried yet. And if you know/like Al on MyTV, you should really check out their tribute to him for his 25th anniversary with the station. It's really well done and humorous. You can find it in the "My Weather" videos in their site's flash player.
For folks who don't get WZMY-DT channel 35 over-the-air or on satellite or cable, he does weather reports on WCAP-AM (remember AM?) 980 khz in Lowell. Their slogan is "everybody gets it", but only if you live NNW and North of Boston. (BTW, WZMY turned in its analog license so there's no WZMY-TV and UHF channel 50 is vacant hereabouts.
He's probably running around in a tizzy in Raleigh, NC now with the few inches of snow they got last week (even a prediction for 1/2 inch there being a severe French Toast Alert) with their extremely sub-par NBC affiliate with which I am, sadly, familiar.
maybe when ed is done with the comb he can hand it over to his co-anchor heather unruh. i dont know if its my high def or what but she looks frazzled.her hair is all over the place and the new glasses make her look like my great aunt ella.channel 5 needs some new blood.

Fruit harridans?
Where do you shop? Do they give you the evil eye or do they actually get physical in their expressions of disgust?
Just curious, since things are obviously way more laid back in the boonies south of the Fenway.

They say 'Super Bowl' on that page
Most other retailers' ads avoid it, fearing some sort of lawsuit from the NFL I guess.
it's THE BIG GAME!

Oh, no! I need eggs and bread! AND MILK!
This calls for a Pullman French loaf
Orange-level French Toast alert calls for a Pullman Loaf from Iggy's and Kate's of Maine butter.
Bacon! I'm thinking Bacon. I wonder what the "bacon of the week" is at Whole Foods...
Mimosa - if it is over 12 inches in Winchester, that strictly calls for mimosa.
I hear Shelby Scott is on

Yes!
Al Kaprielian is, without a doubt, THE most entertaining weatherman in the history of television.

"Good eeeeeeeeevening
"Good eeeeeeeeevening everybody!"
Lloyd Lindsay Young was pretty entertaining, too.
I remember the first time I saw him on WOR when it was a cable "superstation", I did a double-take to make sure he wasn't a Dan Ackroyd character.

Survivalist Prepared!
I not only have milk, bread, eggs, and butter but leftover Lyndell's birthday cake and hoodsies too!!!
If the power goes out we'll just pull the gas grill into the open garage and get our pancake and french toast and home fries on.
Oh god dammit
It's grocery day for me and I need milk, eggs and bread for legitimate grocery-buying reasons, not OMG DETHSTORM 2009 reasons.
Now I'm gonna feel like a goddamn bandwagonner when I'm at the checkout this evening. Even the self-checkout will scorn me.
CURSE YOU WEATHER
I WISH FOR MY GROCERY PURCHASES TO BE ICONOCLASTIC
Am I the only one who shops
Am I the only one who shops during or shortly after the storm? Considering its a block away, I dont see snow as a problem
