The state Department of Public Health yesterday confirmed that the Charles River from the Longfellow to the dam is now full of blue-green algae, which means you need to be especially careful to keep your dogs and young children out of it, the Charles River Watershed Association reports. Read more.

Both escalators blocked at Porter Square

A roving UHub photographer snapped the situation this morning at Porter Square, where both escalators - and one of the stairs - were blocked for some sort of repair work.

The MBTA reports it's managed to fix a Red Line blockage at Porter caused by a train up and dying in the system's deepest station.

The Tech reports on an incident at MIT's Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center in which five children swimming in a pool were "inappropriately touched" by a strange man between 7:30 and 8:50 a.m. on July 24. The guy, about 30 with a mustache, was last seen wearing a lime-green shirt. In response to the incident, MIT now requires an empty lane between child and adult swimmers, the Tech reports.

Cambridge Day reports on the blood on asphalt on Memorial Drive at Ames Street left from where one driver used a pipe upside the other guy's head and that guy took out his licensed gun and plugged his opponent several times. Both will face charges - once they get out of the hospital.

A federal judge today refused to dismiss a lawsuit against Harvard by a group of Jewish students that the school allowed the campus to become a hotbed of antisemitism where Jewish students came under attack by pro-Palestinian demonstrators from Harvard Yard to a Harvard Law School lounge. MIT might have handled anti-Zionist protests on campus differently, but nothing the school did was designed to torment its Jewish students and professors - and in fact, the school took steps, if possibly not enough, to minimize hateful acts and rants against them - a federal judge ruled last week in dismissing a lawsuit by students and a pro-Israel group from California alleging MIT had helped turn itself into an antisemitic cauldron. Cambridge Day reports how Cambridge firefighters, DPW workers and Animal Control teamed up - with the help of an olive-oil donation by a nearby resident - to free a raccoon that somehow got stuck in a sewer grate on Harvey Street in North Cambridge today.

A federal judge today threw out a lawsuit against Harvard University by a Cambridge resident who charged a book published by the school's press libeled the Chinese dictator, who died in 1997. Read more.

Boat on a road in Cambridge

Cambridge Police report a driver hauling a boat on a trailer stopped for a red light at Cambridge and Third streets around 7 p.m., Saturday, the chains holding the boat on the trailer failed and the boat slid right into the road. Took about 40 minutes to get the boat off the road.

Kathleen Stone, who says she was forced to resign as women's hockey coach at Harvard last year, this week sued Harvard and former players and parents over her ouster, alleging they made up crap about her in interviews with a Globe reporter, that she was being punished for behavior that male coaches at the school are allowed to get away with and that she was long paid far less than her male counterparts, despite being the winningest college women's hockey coach - and a one-time coach of the US Olympic hockey team. A new group called Protect the Lincoln Forest launched itself early this morning when a member climbed up a tree on a quarter-acre site off Rte. 2 and created a "tree-sit" to protest an agreement between Cambridge and a Texas pipeline company to cut down at least 24 trees on a lot meant to protect a major Cambridge reservoir - so the company can park trucks and equipment there while it replaces a pipeline facility next door. Update, 10:16 a.m.: The MBTA reports normal Red Line service has resumed.

A maintenance vehicle being used for some overnight work at Park Street derailed this morning, knocking out the third rail and completely disrupting the morning commute. Read more.

The state Energy Facilities Siting Board recently approved plans by Eversource to build a large new underground substation in Kendall Square and 8.5 miles of new high-voltage lines connecting it to other Eversource substations in Brighton and Somerville to deal with growing demand from new construction and electric vehicles - and Vicinity Energy's plans to convert its Kendall Square steam-generating boilers to electric power. Cambridge Police responded to reports of gunfire on Harvard Street near Greene-Rose Heritage Park around 10:05 p.m. Officers found shell casings in several locations near the park, including near Dickinson Street on the other side of the park. No injuries, police say.
