A man taking a smoking break from bowling at Boston Bowl in Dorchester thought the odds at the shell game outside were pretty good: Put down $40 and if he guessed right, he'd win $100.

But, the man told the Boston Licensing Board this morning, after he handed the money to the guy running the shell game on the evening of Sept. 24 - which the guy added to his stack of "a few hundred in his hand" - he realized everybody else huddled around the car hood with bottle caps on it were in cahoots and that he was about to be scammed. So he asked for his money back - just as Boston Bowl security happened on the scene.

Scott Van Voorhis says all signs point to the imminent yuppification of Dorchester, even though, as he notes a couple of times, it's really a series of "mini neighborhoods," including, at least according to him, Andrew Square. Whatever, young professionals are now getting priced out of Southie, and, God, don't even think about Jamaica Plain, so watch out, Dorchester (next thing you know, somebody's going to propose a fancy wine and cheese shop for Dot Ave. Oh, wait ...).

A Dorchester District Court judge set bail of $50,000 today for Cedrick Slayden, 18, arrested yesterday after an alleged failed home invasion that left another man dead.

But Judge James Coffey revoked Slayden's bail on an outstanding charge of larcenty for allegedly stealing a man's iPhone in the North End last May, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. The ruling means that even if Slayden could make the new bail, he'd stay locked up at least until the larceny case was dealt with.

When Det. William Gallagher of the BPD's licensed premises unit finds very young looking people drinking in a bar and they hand over licenses that seem to show they're over 21, he likes to ask them questions on the information on the cards. Such as what their Zip code is.
