Around 6:15 p.m. right at Boylston and Dartmouth. BFD responded quickly to douse the fetid fire, although not before some of the smoke wafted down to the platforms of the Copley T station, worrying some riders.
Fire officials reassured the T that the smoke posed no threat to train service. Of course, this being the Back Bay, the burning trash was special. One Green Line rider reported: "Smelled like incense burning."
Around 10 p.m. Nicky Enriquez found herself confronted with this giant cloud at what appeared to be some roadwork at Newbury and Dartmouth streets:
Totally feel safe walking home tonight - like I won't die of smoke inhalation or anything.
A small evening gathering at the Fairmont Copley Plaza on Feb. 25 created gridlock on surrounding streets and earned the hotel a stern rebuke from the Boston Licensing Board when members heard a hotel manager pooh-poohed a request from a police sergeant to do something about the mess:
MBTA Transit Police report they are looking for this guy, who allegedly scammed somebody out of $260 at Back Bay station with the old altered winning-lottery ticket trick - somebody who gullible enough to dash into Back Bay station to withdraw $260 from an ATM to buy it off him when the guy said he was in too much of a hurry to cash it in himself:
