In a couple weeks, the Zoning Board of Appeals considers a request for a brewery on Massachusetts Avenue that would feature a 24-foot-high grain silo.

The Dorchester Brewing Co., rebuffed in an effort to move into a building on Bowdoin Avenue in Dorchester, will seek ZBA approval to convert an old sheet-metal warehouse at 1271 Mass. Ave. into a brewery where craft brewers can make their own batches of beer. Read more.

The Southampton/Crosstown Safety Task Force met this morning to survey the mounting problem of drug addicts discarding ever growing numbers of needles in the streets and on the sidewalks of the Newmarket Square area - home to a number of programs for drug addicts and the homeless.

A police detective said today an investigation into a stabbing outside the Hen House on Mass. Ave. in January has "stalled" because neither the victim nor his friends waiting for him to bring out some food want to tell police what they know.

Sgt. Det. Kenneth O'Brien told the Boston Licensing Board today the man was stabbed around 4:05 a.m. on Jan. 10, when he and several friends drove over to the Hen House from a "tattoo party" in Roxbury. The man was stabbed in the stomach, badly enough to have the BPD homicide unit called in, just in case.

The MBTA has released a new schedule for the Fairmount Line, effective July 1st. The schedule reveals the opening of Newmarket Station and Four Corners Station. In addition, the schedule features 12 additional trains, bringing the total to 22 inbounds and 21 outbounds each weekday.

The Boston Business Journal reports that Katsiroubas Brothers Fruit and Produce, which sells produce at wholesale, has purchased two modular, hydroponic farming systems from Freight Farms, a South Boston startup that turns 40-foot-long shipping containers into movable farms.

Katsiroubas plans to use the stacked units to grow basil.

A Newmarket Square company that makes frozen fillo pockets stuffed with vegetable and meat fillings says a supplier's paper boxes were so poorly made it lost a contract with Trader Joe's - and $1 million in profits.

In a suit filed yesterday in US District Court in Boston, Peppercorn Food Service charges Atlantic Packaging Corp. of Norwich, CT sold it crappy "ovenable" containers for a private-label line of frozen spinach pies that fell apart in Trader Joe's freezer sections:

The Boston Licensing Board yesterday gave New Market Pizza and Grill at 850 Mass. Ave. permission to extend its closing time from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. seven days a week, after its owner and lawyer assured the board there was a tremendous market for late-night food in an area frequented by hospital workers and cops.

A nearby McDonald's is already licensed for 24-hour operations. Victoria's Diner, a few blocks away, is open 24 hours on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, while the Hen House across from that is open until 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
