School bake sale at City Hall

BPS parents held a bake sale outside City Hall yesterday to make a point about the impact a $61-million shortfall in the school budget will have on their kids. Several city councilors bought baked goods in support.

Inside the Government Center station

The T forwards this photo of the spot on the Government Center Green Line platform where the Dunkin' Donuts used to be as workers continue to tear apart the station as part of a two-year overhaul.

Also, the T reports workers uncovered another 100-year-old tile Scollay Under sign on one of the Blue Line platforms:

The goal is to keep it in place, and build the new stairs around it.

UPDATE, Monday morning: The Crimson reports the student died.

The Crimson reports a Harvard sophomore is in critical condition at Mass. General tonight after he fell from a building early Sunday.

The Crimson said Harvard and Cambridge police declined to say where he fell, except that it was not at Harvard or in Cambridge.

For the second time in a week, Transit Police report arresting a Red Line rider for allegedly selling drugs on a train.

Police say plainclothes detectives watched as Kevin Hembrough, 37, of New Hampshire, sold somebody some Oxycodone pills on a train stopped at South Station around 1:20 p.m. on Friday.

On March 28, detectives arrested a Dorchester woman for allegedly exchanging Klonopin pills for cash on a train at JFK/UMass.

Today's the anniversary of the 1926 arrest of H.L. Mencken on the Common for selling a magazine considered obscene by the local group that banned things in Boston. The charges were dismissed the next day and Mencken won a lawsuit against the Watch and Ward Society. The group's influence continued through 1982, when the position of city censor was eliminated.

Bake sale on City Hall Plaza to raise funds for schools

A group of parents will protest cuts at Boston public schools next week by holding an old-fashioned bake sale outside City Hall.

"Gosh darn it, let's give the Mayor, City and State a hand!" reads the flyer for the bake sale, 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Transit Police report a man trying to piggyback into Downtown Crossing last night ordered the woman whose fare he was trying to share to "hurry up" so he wouldn't get pinched by the fare gate.

The experience apparently so rattled the man that he grew even more agitated as he got on an Orange Line train bound for glory at Forest Hills, which prompted a call to police:

State Police report four separate crashes involving 19 cars made the morning commute into the city messy. One person was injured enough to be taken away in an ambulance.

State Street station filling with smoke

At 5:10 p.m., Lauren Finkelstein reported from the outbound side of State Street:

Smoke filling the cars/station on the orange line at state st stop. Everyone being evacuated.

A minute later, the T sent out an alert about "minor" delays due to what it says is a disabled train at State.
