First Night parade down Boylston Street in Copley Square

A little cold weather didn't deter First Nighters from enjoying the traditional parade down Boylston Street tonight.

Marchers wished watchers a happy new year; some threw glow sticks or applied reflective stickers to the faces of little kids:

What would a parade be without dragons?

The Herald reports on the battle between the BPL board of trustees, who think it's dandy to decorate the main library with Christmas wreathes, and a Back Bay resident who wants to supplement the wreathes with a menorah.

The mayor, who appoints library trustees, has decided it's "not his place" to try to convince them otherwise.

Green Line service turned into a complete oxymoron this morning when a trolley died. The T rolled in substitute buses between Kenmore and Park. At 11 a.m., Zach Tucker tweeted:

3 dark trolleys sitting at Copley IB, no MBTA CSA's anywhere to explain to clueless tourists.

UPDATE: At 1 p.m., the T announced resumption of normal service, but, naturally, with residual delays.

Boring dancers in Copley Square, Back Bay

A concerned citizen complains about the lack of action outside the BPL in Copley Square:

Trio of would-be hip-hoppers have blocked off a large part of sidewalk in front of BPL and are not even dancing. Most boring show ever.

Faux NYPD cruiser in Copley Square

There's an odd sight in Copley Square this morning: A film crew shooting something involving a supposed NYPD cruiser.

No, has nothing to do with "Black Mass." Stefani Vieira, who took the photo, reports it's a German film crew making their own movie in which Boston stands in for the more-expensive-to-shoot-in New York.

She says they're also using the BPL as a stand-in for a jail or police station which would give new meaning to the phrase "Book 'em, Danno," except the Germans probably wouldn't get that.

Steaming manhole

Apparently a manhole outside 505 Boylston St., just past Clarendon, has been steaming all week, giving passersby a strong whiff of something awful. But today, it started steaming even more than usual, and firefighters, at first thinking they were dealing with a flaming manhole, doused the thing with liberal amounts of water. They summoned NStar, whose hole it is, to the scene; before an electrical crew could arrive, firefighters discovered the smoke was, in fact, steam.

A Wakefield man was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bail and sent down to Bridgewater for evaluation at his arraignment today on a variety of charges related to the alleged act of performance art that led police to shut Boylston Street for more than two hours last night on the anniversary of the Marathon bombings.

Suspicious backpack

UPDATE: Kayvon Edson faces a variety of charges in Boston Municipal Court following his arrest at the finish line.

Boylston Street was shut at the Marathon finish line tonight after police found two unattended backpacks - not long after a barefoot man dressed like a Southern belle in mourning danced his way up the street with a backpack on, yelling "Boston Strong."

Changing of the guard on Boylston Street

Brian D'Amico watched commemorations on Boylston Street, including a changing of the guard at a marker for one of the two explosion sites.

Meanwhile, Tom Reiner watched and listened to ships in the harbor sound their horns after the afternoon's moment of silence.

Tags at the Boston Public Library

The BPL's main library in Copley Square currently has an exhibit (in the old, McKim wing) of memorials left by runners and visitors after the Marathon last year. At the end of your walk are several budding trees - and blank tags on which you can write a new message.

At the Old North Church in the North End, you'll find another collection of tags - representing the dog tags of soldiers lost in Afghanistan and Iraq. K.M. Peterson visited the memorial garden recently:

Window replacement on the Hancock building

Stevil watched workers replace a window on the seventh floor of the Hancock tower yesterday:

The scaffold lowers down tracks that are part of the building to one floor above the opening. Then the window which is attached to the yellow disc (blending in with the reflection) traverses to the left and they install it.
