Third man sought for fatal stabbing at South Boston market

Even as a South Boston father and son were being arraigned on murder charges, police continued to hunt for a third man they say also took part in the killing of Edwin Santos outside a Dorchester Street market yesterday.

At the arraignments today of Elias and Angel Sanchez, both of South Boston, Suffolk County prosecutors said the three men started stabbing Edwin Santos around 5 p.m. and then kept stabbing him until they finally got tired and he lay there dying, from stab wounds to the stomach and a "gaping laceration across the top of his head."

Elias Sanchez, 43, was arraigned in a bed at Boston Medical Center, where he is recuperating from his own stab wounds, inflicted, prosecutors say, by a friend of Santos, who vainly tried to defend him from the three-person knife attack. Angel, 16, was arraigned earlier in the day. Both were ordered held without bail.

The DA's office provided this account:

[Assistant DA Mark] Zanini told the court that Santos was standing in front of a Dorchester Street market with a female friend just before 5:00 p.m. when Elias Sanchez approached him and began assaulting him with a club or baton. Within seconds, Zanini said, Angel Sanchez joined in, opening a knife and using it to stab Santos repeatedly.

A third man then joined the attack and investigators believe he, too, stabbed Santos. That man’s identity remains under investigation.

As Santos backed away from the three armed assailants and attempted to ward off the onslaught, his female friend attempted to defend him, first by trying to pull the attackers off of him and then by using a knife with which she had armed herself. Despite her efforts, however, the three men continued to beat and stab Santos "until the attackers tired of it," Zanini said.

Police didn't have to travel far to find the father and son - both live on E. 9 Street, around the corner from the market.

Innocent, etc.

I seem to recall that Bell's has several cameras around the store- maybe one of them captured this attack?

These people are not from South Boston. They are from the projects, which just happen to be located in South Boston.

There is a big difference between being from a place and just living there. Very few people who live in the projects are actually from the neighborhood the project is located. They are moved around the system by the BHA to ensure diversity. This is social engineering (thank you liberals) at it's finest. Has anyone every asked why there are no projects on Beacon Hill?

By diversity, you mean "lack of racial discrimination", right? i.e. giving anyone the option to live in any BHA project, instead of maintaining separate waiting lists for white people and black people.

I was born in NH. I now live in Boston. Previously I've lived in 3 different cities and 2 different states. I'm not from Boston. I live in Boston.

If someone grows up in the housing project in south boston, they aren't from south boston? That's what the original poster was implying.

By all accounts they lived on the same public housing block as Amy Lord's murderer. BHA is doing a great job screening these tenants.

You people make me sick! I grew up with the man, and wouldn't you know it. I'm FROM BOSTON! You're all putting your diluted, selfish emphases on the fact that he was, in YOUR OPINION, from or not from Boston. Also to make this a political sounding board; for shame! What fools you are! I am appalled that this is what people have to say when a man is brutally murdered. No public outcry for justice but, "ew, he's a project kid"! There is a special place for people like you. The one sound person with scruples, aside from myself, to post here said "Bell's has surveillance". One day you will all lose someone you know and I pray the people are as sympathetic to your dismay as you have been. He had a family!

im so glad you said what you said... i knew him too, and when i had no place to go he gave me a spot in e.boston to live. these people have no respect on here.. this kid woulda went up against an army for me if i needed him to and i only knew him for a short period of time. he had more heart then anyone person on here could dream of. and he was from boston, fawndale in roslindale if you must know...and he was proud of it...i witnessed first hand for almost a year his life and although his lifes choices and lifestyle was dangerous, he stood by his beliefs and never backed down...what happen here is so sad, and him and i would talk some nights smokin n drinkin about there being only 2 ways out of gang life, and unfortuantly his stand on this topic was always him telling me he was willing to pay either of these. be it death or jail...."BUG" was a soldier and if you knew him you would know this, you would know that the most important thing in life to him was loyality and respect....so please stay in your place when it comes to the departed. because knowing Edwin "BuG" SantoS changed my life for ever and in essence he saved my life when i was at my lowest point and had no where to go... ResT IN PiecE BUG,be easy kid.... JASON M. PENNEY "BELL ROCK PARK"
