Boston expands phone payment to every parking meter in the city

Mayor Walsh plays board hockey

After an invigorating game of bubble hockey in the South End today, Mayor Walsh announced the expansion of the city's ParkBoston app to all of the city's 8,000 parking meters.

Even in more limited use, the city said the app had 100,000 active users, who pay for parking spaces on their phones, rather than fishing through their center consoles for spare coins.

The hockey table was part of a pop-up arcade the city set up to show what people who park at metered spaces can do with their coins now, such as play Ms. Pac-Man and Whack-a-Mole (Ed. question: Are there any arcades actually left in Boston?)

The average number of transactions taking place per day in July was 3,361; in August, 4,665; and in September, 6,054. A one day high of 9,486 transactions was reached on October 29th.

Jillian's and King's in the Fenway of course. The Fenway Regal Cinema has a small arcade. Boston Bowl in Dorchester. Ron's in Hyde park has a few games as well as the lanes. And East Coast Gaming in West Rox has an full sized arcade bus that is supposedly the shiznit.

Has anyone tried used the app, then extended their 'stay' by paying a second two-hours with cash (or credit card?) or vice-versa?

Or does the app itself let you 'renew' a block of 2 hours?

Mostly asking out of curiosity regarding the way they enforce the 2-hour limit (even when you pay); cold day in hell when I park in the city.

Apparently meter attendants are marking tires. Heard there is a small catch in the system that for some reason that i don't exactly recall, the system lets you reset for another two hours in a very small time window after your two hours expires. BTD has caught on and is using old fashioned chalk to mark the tires to track scofflaws.

When traffic enforcement comes by they enter your plate number in their handheld doohickey to see if you've paid. If you stay much over the 2 hour limit you're very likely to get busted.
