Newton gets a local news site that has actual local news

Amy Sangiolo's Fig City News has beaten the Newton Beacon to filling the news hole left when Gannett pulled the plug on what was left of its Newton coverage.

Sangiolo is a former city councilor who tried to unseat incumbent Mayor Ruthanne Fuller. For now, she's financing the site herself.

The Beacon, which will be put out by a new Newton non-profit, hopes to hire "paid professional journalists." One of the people involved in that effort is Greg Reibman, former publisher of the newspaper chain that once ran an actual newspaper in Newton.
