Do you play Monopoly with money on Free Parking?

In any case, Park and Pray reminds us that you can park for free at metered spaces on Saturdays in Boston between Nov. 29 and Dec. 27 - but only for two hours at a time. Or you can shop in one of the many fine business districts outside Boston Proper where the parking is always free (oh, no, I'm starting to sound like Rhode Island Treasurer Frank Caprio!).

Interview with Boston's poet laureate

Doug Holder talks to Sam Cornish on his influences, why he doesn't consider himself part of the '60s Black Arts Movement and on the importance of stripped-down poetry. Also:

... Right now I am available for people through the library and also through Mayor Menino's office. If people call and request my presence at a school or senior citizen's center, or where people would like a poet, I go. I try to be the person to bring a poem to people who might not read poetry, or those who want to talk to a poet about the craft. ...

The sixth borough

Oh, wait, that's Philadelphia. So maybe it should be "The seventh borough." In any case, Phillip McCarthy reports spotting his second NYC taxi cab in the Boston area today, near the Fresh Pond Mall (with photographic proof):

... Between the NYPD Impala that drove by me in Central Square a few weeks ago and the other yellow cab I spotted in Harvard Square, I'm starting to wonder if Mayor Bloomberg is quietly annexing his old stomping grounds.

Another icon comes tumbling down

First Belinda the Willow Tree, now the radio tower atop the College of Communications at BU. Ross Levanto reports BU today took down the radio tower that had long symbolized the college, even if it hadn't actually broadcast anything since the 1950s:

... Maybe only a BU COM grad can understand, but it was somewhat of a poignant, if accidental moment. We recognize COM by the antenna in diametrically opposed ways. You think radio, of course, when you see it, but its derelict status always reminded the COM student of the equally decrepit halls of the building itself.

Ed. parochial note: What's next? That weird MIT radarish thing behind the fire station on Centre Street in West Roxbury?

Quite possibly the worst column that will ever be written about Chuck Turner

If there were a Bulwer-Lytton competition for columns, Joe Fitzgerald might have a winner with his column today on Turner, which approvingly quotes Louis Farrakhan and ends:

Even if he beats the rap, Turner has blown the chance to be what's so urgently needed today, a leader to emulate, worthy of a kid's admiration.

So even if Turner is found innocent, he's still guilty? And Louis Farrakhan is now a public figure to emulate?

Rhode Island treasurer made of whole cloth

Amy Derjue reports from south of the border that Rhode Island's state treasurer has started a billboard campaign convince us to all drive down to Rhode Island to buy clothes because there's no sales tax on clothing.

Frank Caprio has even set up a Web site to let us know that not only does Little Rhody not tax clothes, the entire state is "conveniently located off Interstate 95."

Only problem, as Derjue notes, is that Massachusetts doesn't tax clothes up to $175, and even if you buy something worth more, you only pay taxes on the upper value:

Unless you live in Attleboro or drive a hybrid, you'll spend more on gas to get here than you'd save.

The Providence Journal reports Caprio has spent $12,000 (from his campaign funds, not state funds) so far and is looking to spend even more. Sounds like a real winner.

That water is wicked cold

The Coast Guard alerts us that New England rivers and lakes and the nearby ocean are now "dangerously cold," which means you could die quickly if you jump or fall in, especially if you don't have a life jacket to keep you afloat long enough for somebody to fish you out.

You wouldn't think people would need to be told that, but the Coast Guard also informs us that 18 people have drowned in New England waters since Labor Day and that none was wearing a life jacket. Also, in Massachusetts, wearing a life jacket isn't just a good idea - it's the law, at least through next May.

He can quit the Internet any time he wants

Jason has bet some friends $150 that he can go 24 hours without using a computer or the Internet. In turn, he bet one of his friends the guy couldn't go 24 hours without alcohol.
