Jamaica Plain: Shofar, sho good

A Jewish tradition holds you should blow a shofar every day of the month leading up to Rosh Hashanah. David Levy provides a Boston interpretation by doing it all over Boston, here in Jamaica Plain (more from the Shofar across Boston tour).

Tower at new Old South not as old as rest of new Old South

Old South tower construction, 1937Old South tower reconstruction, 1937.

By 1932, the tower at what was then called New Old South Church in Copley Square was leaning so much the church had to tear it down for fear it would topple over. Construction began in 1937 on a replica replacement that, so far, has not become a leaning tower of Boston atop the original 1875 church.

Leslie Jones photographed both the demolition of the old tower and the construction of the new one - here in a shot from the Lenox Hotel. More photos, in the BPL's Boston churches collection.

Boston vs. San Francisco

Fresh off a trip to the West Coast, Marjorie Arons-Barron compares the two cities, concludes:

A generation or two ago, San Francisco had a distinct magic, which could make a Bostonian envious of its cosmopolitanism and self-conscious about our parochialism. I don’t feel that way any more.

A three-alarm fire in a six-story apartment building at 90 Westland Ave. sent residents scurrying into the night when it erupted around 2:40 a.m.

The Boston Fire Department reports no injuries from the fire, which was flaming from the roof when firefighters arrived.

The building, known as Cappy's Corner, houses students from several nearby colleges. The mayor's office assisted them in finding alternate housing for the night.

The blaze did an estimated $400,000 in damage, the department says, adding investigators this morning are still trying to determine the cause.

Alex Kaufman has more.

Arrest of teen by Ruggles may be related to South End murder

Boston Police report a teen spotted leaving the area where another teen was shot to death in the South End last night was arrested on gun charges.

Police emphasized the 16-year-old, not named because of his age, was not charged with Alex Sierra's murder. However:

A gold motor vehicle was seen leaving the area of the shooting. Officers promptly broadcast a description of the motor vehicle over the police radio. In short time, officers from Area B-2 (Roxbury) observed a vehicle fitting the description of the vehicle seen leaving the scene traveling along Annunciation Rd. Consequently, officers activated their emergency equipment (lights & sirens) and stopped the car. As officers approached the vehicle, two of the occupants took off on foot. During the foot chase, officers located a firearm.

The teen was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Annunciation Road in Roxbury is home to the Mission Main and Alice Taylor housing projects, where teens have long feuded with their counterparts from Villa Victoria development in the South End, where Sierra grew up and right around the cornder from where he was murdered.

American barbecue drives right into Chinatown

Jacqueline Church samples the offerings at BBQsmith, a food truck that can now often be found parked by the Chinatown gate.

I chose the smoked beef sandwich. Doc had smoked pork. Both sandwiches were fantastic.
