Gruff clothier was gruff, not racist, state rules

Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly reports on a ruling by the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination that the owner of a Downtown Crossing clothing store was irascible but not racist when he demanded to know why a black man from Kenya thought he sold watches.

The commission said Alan Swartz, formerly of Mr. Alan's Clothing, was just naturally cranky and that it did not believe Swartz threatened the man with a baseball bat or racial epithets when the man came into the store and asked if Swartz knew where he could get a phone fixed. The commission noted that not only was Swartz's clientele primarily minority and that he employed black workers, he was married to a black woman.

And the winner for best city to make an independent movie in is ...

Boston!

With its low unemployment rates, above-average paychecks and full supply of moviemaking professionals and newcomers emerging from one of the area's many highly-ranked film program (including Emerson College, Boston University and the Center for Digital Imaging at BU), Boston's film scene has been ready to explode for years. But with three of this award season's buzz movies' roots planted firmly in the Bay State - The Fighter, The Social Network and The Town - the time has finally arrived.

A city falling apart: Wall could tumble at Washington Street and Mass. Ave.

A wall that city inspectors have been warning for years could collapse appears ready to finally do just that. Boston firefighters are at 1769 Washington St., where one brick fell this afternoon from the wall, which fire officials now say is on the verge of imminent collapse.

Then again, back in September, the Globe reported city building inspectors had warned the wall was "in danger of collapsing under its own weight." The building is marked with a large X to warn firefighters of its unsafe condition, which the city confirmed during an inspection last year following the nine-alarm warehouse in Roxbury.

The property, the former Ivory Bean building, is owned by the Church of Scientology, which has been saying since it bought the building in 2008 along with the neighboring Hotel Alexandra, that it plans to renovate it for use as part of its new Boston headquarters.
