Convicted child rapist says making him register no different than Jim Crow racism in the South

The Jamaica Plain Gazette interviews Joel Pentlarge, treasurer for JP state-rep candidate Jeffrey Herman. Pentlarge pleaded guilty to five counts of rape and abuse of a child in 2000; he says it was statutory rape, not the other kind, and he served his time and that shouldn't affect his desire to do bookkeeping for a local political candidate.

Bank robber runs on Dunkin'

Woburn Police are looking for a guy who apparently made a pit stop at a Dunkin' Donuts before robbing a nearby bank.

Police say the guy wrote out his demand note - for $100 bills - on a Dunkin' Donuts napkin before holding up the TD Bank branch at 280 Montvale Ave. around 10:50 a.m. on May 12. They say he may have been in the Dunkin' Donuts down Montvale before the robbery.

He's described as white, 5'6", mid-20s, with unshaved, sunken cheeks and wearing a white hoodie with a black vest over it and latex gloves. May have made his escape on commuter rail in a silver Malibu.

Somerville, state agree where to put new Green Line maintenance facility

The new "Option L" building and storage area will go in the Inner Belt, next to the MBTA's existing commuter-rail maintenancy facility, city and state officials announced today. In a statement issued by MassDOT, Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone said:

Not only does the decision about where to locate the Green Line maintenance facility ensure that the Green Line expansion into Somerville remains on its 2014 timeline, the chosen location creates the opportunity for significant redevelopment inside the city's industrial Inner Belt. Best of all, this will help preserve the quality of life for nearby residents, notably those in the Brickbottom artist lofts. Today we're significantly closer to achieving the better, brighter, more connected future we envision for this city.

First Lord Jesus Christ gets hit by a car, now Messiah loses court case

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today a gun allegedly tossed over a fence by a man being chased by police can be used against him.

At issue was when Messiah Franklin felt he was under police orders to stop and submit to officers after a carful of cops noticed him and another guy hanging out on Harmon Street in Mattapan on the evening of Nov. 18, 2006.

A lower-court judge had thrown out the gun evidence as illegal, ruling the police "seizure" started as soon as the officers got out of their Crown Victoria and that simply hanging out is not in itself suspicious, even if Franklin had started "looking around" when the cops pulled up.

But the state's highest court rejected that argument, saying the "seizure" did not happen until after Franklin had given officers plenty of reason to suspect he was up to no good - and that at no time did the officers even yell "stop:" As he ran, Franklin clutched his waist as if he had a gun there. When he found himself dead-ended by a six-foot-high stockade fence, Franklin tossed something over the top, which the officers heard land on the other side with "a metallic sound." Then Franklin began to try to climb the fence.

Therefore, the court concluded, the gun can be used as evidence against Franklin.

Complete ruling.
